UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANCIS M. KING, OF PHILADELPHIA,PENNSYLVANIA.
HAN D-STAM P.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 451,275, dated April 28, 1891.
- Application filed January 28, 1889. Serial No. 297,893. (No model.)
To all whom it mag concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANCIS M. KING, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hand-Stamps, of which the following is a specification, reference being ha to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to an improvement in hand-stamps; and it consists of a casing with a type-bar, and a spring-roller within said casing having atype-band connected therewith and passing overthe type-bar, in connection with a fastening for the free end of said typeband.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a hand-stamp embodying my invention, shown inverted. Fig. 2 represents a similar view of my improved device, shown inverted, with one of the rollers removed.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a case or frame, having a printing-bar D and suitable handle E. A spring-roller B is mounted in the casing near said bar D, and adjacent to said roller B is mounted a movable spring-roller B. Connected to said roller is a type strip or band 0, having raised letters, figures, characters, symbols, or whatsoever may be desired, arranged consecutively thereon. Each spring-roller operates in an opposite direction, and as one is wound or unwound to bring the required letter, figure, or character across the printing-bar D the other roller unwinds or winds correspondingly.
In operation the upper spring-roller B is removed from the casing, and the type-strip C is then wound or unwound by the operation of the rollers, so as to bring the required letter, figure, &c., on the printing-bar D,Wh,en said roller B will be replaced within the easing in its original position and properly secured. The type strip or band 0 is made of flexible material, preferably rubber, similar to rubber stamps, and as it is bent around the printing-bar the friction therewith is sufficient to prevent shifting of said strip, so that the type is maintained in position, the springs of the rollers not being necessarily powerful in their nature. The stamp may then be turned to proper position and an impression made therefrom.
It is evident that more than one pair of rollers may be used, so that several typebands may present the characters to be printed or stamped. 1
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A hand-stamp having a casing with a type-bar, a spring-roller with type-band thereon, and a fastening for the end of said typeband, said parts being combined substantially as described.
2. A hand-stamp having a spring-roller, a removable roller, and a type strip or band connected with said roller, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses. Y
FRANCIS M. KING.
