Description

UNITED STATES ATENT EEICE.
DANIEL SEXTON, OF SAN GABRIEL, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVED APPARATUS FOR RACKING OFF WINES, LIQUORS, dic.
l Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 45,086, dated November 15, 1864.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL SEX'roN, of San Gabriel, in the county ot' Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Racking off Wines and Liquors; and I do hereby declare that the follon in g is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to malte and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making part of this specitication, said drawing representin g a vertical central section of my invention.
The object ot' this invention is to obtain a means ot' racking oft wines and liquors--that is to say, drawing them from one cask into another, and Without exposing them to the air and Without disturbing the sediment in the caslr from which the wine or liquor is drawn.
A represents a cash containing the wine or liquor which is to be racked or drawn ott', and B is a cask into which the Wine or liquor is to pass from A, communication between the two casks being obtained by a tube, C, which may be constructed of an elastic material. rIhis tube may be connected to the casks at any desired parts.
D is a pump constructed to operate on the principle ot' a bellows, the sides bein g ot' leather or other iiexible material, attached to circular wooden plates or heads c at its upper and lower ends, and provided with a wooden partition, b, at its center, having a hole, c, made centrally through it.
A valve, d, opening upward, is placed in the lower head et, and a similar valve, d', is placed in the upper head (t, and a lever or handle, E, is connected to the upper head a, the fulcrum c of said lever being in a standard, F, attached to a basepla-te, G, to which the lower head a is attached.
In the lower head a and plate G there is secured a tube, H, of taper or conical form, designed to be iitted in the bunghole of the cask B, into which the liquor is t0 be drawn.
From the above description it Will be seen that by working the lever or handle E up and down the pump I) will be expanded and contracted, exhausting the air from B as it expands, and having said air ejected from it as it contracts. As the air is exhausted from B the liquor Will iiow from A into B, a vent being allowed the cash A.
The pump D, in consequence of being constructed, as shown and described, without metal, cannot get out of Working order by corroding, a contingency attending the use of metal pumps owing to the acidity ot' many kinds of liquors-for instance, such as acid wines.
2y this arrangement the liquor may be racked oft' without disturbing the sediment contained within the Cask from which it is drawn, and the cask into which the liquor is forced by the pressure of the atmosphere may be higher than the one from which it is drawn, it not being at all essential as regards the relative position of the two casks. The air also is prevented from coming in contact with the liquor, which in many cases is extremely injurious to the latter.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent` tacking ott' wines and other liquors by means 0t` an air-pump constructed on the principle ot' or similar to a bellows, and of wood and leather or other flexible material, applied in the manner substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
DANI EL SEXTUN.
