Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
.IVORY HAZELTON, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGrNOR OF TWO THIRDS TO ABRAHAM ENGARD, OF SAME PLACE.
JOURNAL-BEARING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 449,935, dated April '7, 1891.
Application filed November 11,1890. Serial No. 371,060. (No model.)
T all whom/ it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVORY HAZELTON, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Journal-Baringand Lubricators, which improvement is fully set forth in the followingspe'cilication and accompanying drawings.
Io My invention relates to improvements in lubricators; and it consists in the novel construction of the same. p
It also consists of a ball-bearing having a passage-way or channel therein for the feed- I5 ing of the oil from said chamber.
It further consists of the 4combination of parts, hereinafter described.
Figure l represents a perspective View of an axle-box and bearing forming a lubricator 2o as embodying my invention.` Fig. 2 represents a vertical sectional view of the lubricator shown in Fig. l. Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of the journal-bearing.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre- 2 5 sponding parts in the several ligures.
Referring to the drawings, designates an axle-box suitably secured inthe frame B of the truck, and having its top provided on its under side with depending pieces C, forming 3o the side walls of a chamber D for containing a supply of oil or other lubricating material.
E designates -a casting adapted to rest on an axle or shaft, and having its upper portion E of the form of a segment of a sphere and 3 5 adapted to closely contact with the lower edges of the pieces C, and thereby form a bottom forthe said chamber D. In the said casting E, which forms a bearing for the axle F of the running-Wheel G of the truck, are
4o the passages or channels H, leading from the lubricant-chamber D to the periphery of the said axle, so that the oil can pass from said chamber to said axle, and thereby lnbricate the latter. Owing to the spheroidal upper face of the bearing E, the same, While forming a close it and adjusting itself to the wear of the edges of the Walls C, at all times is adapted to freely move on the said Walls C of the chamber to accommodate the movements of the axle as controlled by the line of travel of 5o the wheel G, after the manner of a ball-joint.
The top Wall of the axle-box is provided with an opening or openings J, for the admission of oil into the chamber D, and the said openings are closed with screw orother plugs 5 5 to preventthe entrance of dirt, and also the spilling of the oil therefrom.
The opening K of the axle-box, through which the axle F enters the box, is of sufficient size to permit the movements of the axle 6o therein, and the lower portion of the said box may, if desired, be filled with waste to catch the drip of the lubricant from the axle.
Having thus described my invention, WhatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of an axle-box with a chamber therein, and a journal-bearing having a portion of segmental spheroidal shape with passages therein, said portion forming a 7o bottom for said chamber, substantially as described.
2. A lubricator consisting of a support with a lubricant-chamber therein, and a bearingpiece havinga portion of segmental spheroidal shape provided With passages and forming a bottom for said chamber, said parts being combined substantially as described.
3. The combination of an axle-box having a lubricant-chamber, with a journal-bearing 8o having a rounded portion in contact with said chamber and forming a bottom for the same, said chamber and rounded portion forming a ball'joint, and said journal-bearing having a passage for the outletof the oil, substantially as described.
4. A lubricator consisting of a support with a lubricant-chamber therein, and a bearingpiece adapted to rest on a journal or shaft and having a spheroidal portion forming a 9o bottom for said lubricant-chamber, said parts being combined substantially as described.
IVORY HAZELTON.
