To all whom, it may concer/L.-
Be it known that I, ANDREW WICKE Y, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in thc county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ealing-Presses, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of baling-presses that are provided with a 'vertically-reciprocating board or feeder to force the loose material into the chamber of the press in front of the beater, sothat as the latter advances it will force the charge forward i-nto the bale-chamber. Various means have been employed with more or less success to swing this board in the most desirable manner, and itis to the solution of thisproblem that my invention is directed. It has been found that the hay or other material to be baled is best handled when this board is given as nearly as possible an exactly-vertical movement up and down, and various devices have been invented with a view to gaining such a movement. There are, however, certain necessary requirements in the application of this feeder to a baling-press and its operation thereon that make this problem exceedingly difficult of solution.
It is the object of my invention to more nearly approximate such vertical movement than has been done heretofore; and to such end said invention consists in the improved devices and combinations thereof hereinafter described and claimed.
A drawing is furnished herewith containing two figures, of which- Figure l shows a side view of the portion of a baling-press to which my invention is applied, together with said invention in its preferred form; and Fig. 2 is an end view, looking in the direction of the arrow to in Fig. l.
Referring to the parts of the structure by means of the reference-letters applied thereto, A is the frame of the baling-press; B, a portion of the gearing of the same, which is driven by any suitable mea-ns and may be of any preferred form; C, a pitman-rod reciprocated through suitable connections with the gearing, and D one of the side boards which aid in guiding the hay into the feed-opening in the top of the machine.
The board E (seen directly above the side board) is the feeder above referred to, and is shown at the upper limit of its swing in position to allow the hay to be pitched upon the feed-opening beneath it. This board is carried by two levers F G, the former being pivoted to the board at f to a bracket- H, secured to the top of the machine by a pivot h, and to the rod C by means of a pivot c. This lever is preferably made with the arms f f', (see Fig. 2,) one of which is arranged at each side of the feeder E. The other lever is pivoted at fz'. to a bracket l, secured to the top of the machine between the bracket H and the feedopening, and carries at its opposite end pins or rollers g.
The feeder E is preferably composed of two boards c c', spaced apart a slight distance, and rigidly connected by the spool-shaped castings K, and slotted from the top to within a short distance from the bottom, as shown in Fig. i. The lever G also preferably extends into this slot, and the rollers or pins g project laterally from said lever between the boards e e', and are adapted to slide or roll up and down between said boards and between t-he castings K. This lever will ordinarily be held in the position shown in the drawings by its own gravity; but to aid the latter' a spring S may be attached to it at some intermediate point and to the top of the ma- Chine.
The ope ation of the above device is as follows: The lever F, being oscillated upon its pivot h by the pitman-rod C, forces the feeder E downward into the feed-chamber of the machine. The lever G maintains the same position in relation to the feeder, as shown, until it rests upon the top of the press, or preferably upon a bracket d, attached thereto. Then as the feeder continues downward the lever G remains stationary and the roller g travels upward between the boards ce', guiding the feeder in an almost exactly vertical direction into the feed-chamber. Then the feeder E commences its stroke in the opposite direction the operation is reversed, the lever resting upon the bracket a until the roller g reaches the lower casting K, when it is lifted into its first position.
While the above device docs not gain a strictly vertical movement of the feeder E throughout its entire swing, yet it does give IOO , During this portion of the movement the lever G rests upon the bracket a or top of the machine, making the pivot of the roller g stationary, and during the remainder of the swing the lever G is lifted out of the Way for the insertion of the new charge.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In combination with the frame of a balin g-press, a feeder carried by two levers F G, the lever F being` provided with suitable means for oscillating` the same. and being,` rigidly pivoted to the feeder, and lever G being connected with said feeder by means of asliding pivot having a limited vertical motion With relation to the latter, substantially as described.
2. In combination with the frame of a baling-press, a feeder operated by means of two levers, one of which vF is rigidly pivoted to the frame of the machine at 7L and to the feeder at fand provided with suitable connections for oscillating it upon its pivot, and the other G is rigidly pivoted to the frame of the machine between the pivot h and the feeder, and adapted to guide the feeder in its stroke by means of a pivot g, which has a limited vertical movement with respect tl1ereto,substan tially as described.
3. In combination with the frame of a baling-press and suitable driving mechanism, a pitman C, reciprocated by said driving mechanism, alever F, pivoted to the frame and oscillated by said pitman, a feeder E, composed of the parts e e', pivoted to said lever, a lever G, also pivoted to the frame, and a `guiding pin or roller g, carried by the free end of the lever G and adapted to move up and down between the parts e e', substantially as described.
4. In a balng-press,the combination of the feeder E, composed of the parts e e K, the lever F, pivoted thereto and to the frame of the machine, the pitman-rod C, pivoted to said lever F, the lever G, pivoted to theframc of the machine and bearing at its free end the rollers g, and the spring S, tending to draw the lever G downward toward the top of the press, substantially as described.
5. In combination With the frame of a baling-press and suitable driving mechanism, a feeder E, a bracket l-I, secured to the frame, a pitman C, reciprocated by the driving mechanism, a lever F, fulcrumed upon the bracket H and pivoted at its ends to the feeder E and the lever F, respectively, a bracket I, also secured to the frame, an arm G, pivoted at one end to the bracket I and at the other end, by means of a sliding pivot, to the feeder E, and a rest a, also secured to the frame, substantially as described.
G. In combination with the frame of a baling-press and suitable driving mechanism, a pitman C, reciprocated by said driving mechanism, a bracket H, secured to the frame, a feeder E, a lever F, fulcru med upon said bracket and pivoted at its ends to the pitman and the feeder, respectively, a bracket I, also secured to the frame, an arm G, pivoted at one end to the bracket I and engaged at its other end with the feeder by means of a sliding pivot, a spring S, and a rest a., substantially as described.
