CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 448,039, dated March 10, 1891. Application filed October 31, 1890. Serial No. 369,878. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
4Be it known that I, SHERMAN M. HOBSON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pueblo, in the county of Pueblo and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and usefulImprovements in Car-Couplings, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My improvement in car-couplings consists in the novel construction, combination,.and arrangement of the parts, substantially as hereinafter described, and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 isa top or plan view thereof. Fig. 9. is a longitudinal section on the line :t oc, and Fig is a front view of one of the couplings.
In the embodiment of my invention I construct the hooks A with lin k-recesses A,\vhich are designed only for use in coupling With such cars as are provided only with the ordinary or old link draw-bars, and each couplinghook is provided with vertical bolt-orifices A, and each section of the coupling is constructed precisely similar, save that the beveled guards B and B,Where they face each other, are on opposite sides of the castings C and C', and hence in coupling one faces to the right and the other to the left, the purpose of which is to cause the hooks to be directed in the right direction as the cars approach for coupling.
The castings C and C each consist of a frame D, covered at top and bottom, and having vertical recesses or slots D formed in either side of its vertical Walls, wherein is loosely disposed the draw-bridges E and E, which fall down and over the coupling-hooks A and thus affect the coupling operation.
The draw-bridges E E are each rounded Oif at bottom, as shown, to admit the hooks A, each having a correspondingly-beveled nose to slide thereunder and raise the draw-bridge,
and thus automatically to pei vform the coupling operation, the recess behind the nose of the hooks permitting the nose to catch under the draw-bridge.
The draw-bridges E E slide up or down on the guide-rods a a, which bridges are oriticed for their reception, and are elevated in uncoupling by means of the vertical rod b, secured by staple or eye d to the draw-bridges.
In mounting the couplings any form of ordinary buffer-springs may be employed.
Thus constructed the coupling operation may be performed automatically by cars similarly equipped with couplings, and the coupling may also be readily effected with those cars equipped only with link-couplings, and in all respects a reliable, highly-efficient, and comparatively inexpensive car-coupling is thus produced.
Having thus fully described my invent-ion, I olaiml. In a car-coupling, the casting having beveled guards on each side thereof, in combination with the beveled coupling-hooks having bolt-orifices and link-recesses, and the draw-bridges, substantially as shown, and for the purposes described.
2. In a car-coupling, the hooks having boltorifices and recesses for reception of links, in combination with the casting containing the draw-bridge, substantially as shown, and for the purpose described.
3. In a car-coupling, the combination of the castings carrying draw-bridges, the beveled guards, and the hooks, substantially as shown SHERMAN M. I-IQBSON.
