\VARREN M. BRINKERHOFF, OF AUBURN, NEIV YORK.
SPRING-TOOTH FOR HARROWS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 447,936, dated March 10, 1891.
Application filed December 22, 1890- Serial No. 375,486. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, WARREN M. BRINKER- HOFF, a citizen of the United States, residing at Auburn,in the county of Cayuga and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring-Teeth for Harrows; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention is an improved spring-tooth for harrows.
In the accompanying drawings 1 have shown several modes in which I have contemplated embodying my invention, and said invention is disclosed in said drawings and in the following description and claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a rear perspective view of one form of harrowtooth embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a rear perspective view of a tooth of like constructionhaving a detachable point. Fig. 5 is a front perspective view of a tooth formed in two parts with a detachable point, and Fig. 4 is a View of a modified form of tooth.
In spring harrow teeth formed in the usual way, presenting a broad surface to the line of draft at or near the surface of the ground,t-here isliability of the tooth to gather grass, weeds, or other debris, which serves to prevent the soil from passing freely away from the tooth at this point and not infrequently causes the soil to become impacted upon the tooth, thereby clogging the harrow. To avoid this is the object of my present construction.
In the figures of the drawings, A designates the main spring-body of the harrowtooth. The tooth, as shown in Fig. 1, is provided with apoint or shoe A, of usual breadth, and above the point or shoe the tooth is provided between the points a a with a narrower portion, formed by bending the sides of the same backward so that theywill lie closely together. This portion of the tooth presenting quite a narrow surface to the front, avoids the clogging above referred to. The tooth may be made in a single piece, as shown in Fig. 1, or may be provided with a detachable point A". For convenience in the manufacture of the tooth the folded or narrow portion may be made separate and this portion secured to the main body, as shown in Fig. 3.
In Fig. 4 I have shown a modification of the construction, in which the point or shoe A extends upward a greater distance and is secured to a portion of the tooth turned at right angles to the main body and the upper part of the tooth being folded back and fitted closely to the part to which it is secured. ,In this construction the narrow portion is slightly thicker than in the other forms, but the same result is secured. In this construction the tooth may extend upward over and form the entire narrow part of the tooth, or there may be a portion of the main body of the tooth above the point, presenting a narrow surface to the line of draft.
WVhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent. is
1. An arched flat spring-tooth for harrows or cultivators, having a broad surface presented to the line of draft throughout the main portion of its length and having at its lower extremity a broad earth-engaging part and a narrower portion between the said earth-engaging part and the broad main body of the tooth, formed by compactly folding or doubling back the parts intervening between them, substantially as described.
2. Au arched flat spring-tooth for harrows or cultivators, having a broad surface presented to the line of draft throughout the main portion of its length and a broad earthengaging part at its lower extremity, and a narrower part between the broad earth-eugaging part and the broad portion 'of the main body, formed by compactly folding or doubling back the edges of main body together, substantially asdescribed.
In testimonywhereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
\VARREN M. BRINKERI-IOFF.
