UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
JOHN REILLEY, OF JERSEY CITY, NEWV JERSEY.
Fl LE- HAN DLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 447,904, dated March 10, 1891.
Application filed April 18, 1890- Serial No. 348,585. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN REILLEY, a citizeniof the United States, residing at Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in File-Handles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,in which Figure 1 represents a side view of my device. Fig. 2 is a rear view of the same. Fig. 3 is also a rear View showing the handle in an oblique position. Fig. 4 is a side view of the block or base E, shown in Fig. 1 detached from the handle; and Fig. 5 is a side view of the handle detached from the file and base-block. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of foot or base E, and Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the tool end of the handle.
My invention relates to a file-handleso constructed and arranged on the file that it gives the workman control of the file in all places, such as corners, curves, or anywhere the file is required to be used, without removing the file from the handle unless to change a file of a different cut or shape in order to finish the work.
The objects of my improvements are to do away with all obstructions on the side or edge of the file, such as clamps, bolts, nuts, or anything that will prevent the workman from using the edge of the file on either side when so required.
The base of the handle, when set in position on the file, leaves one-eighth of an inch or more of the file clear of base, so that the edge of the file can be used in corners. The pin in the after end under the handle in base is a steadying-pin D, so that when inserted into the after hole 1) in the file it brings the forward hole in the base of the handle directly over the hole a in the file, which is tapped with a five-seventh tap or larger, so that the base of the handle can be made fast to the file by the thumb-screw B.
The handle A is cast in one piece and the base E in another. The object of that was so that I could have the handle made adjustable by a swivel-joint, so that the handle can be set to any angle required to suit the work or the workmans hand. The construction of that joint is as follows: The end of the base or stock of the handle is made of a circular shape, as at cl, leaving clearance enough from the surface of the file to allow the handle A to swing on the center. The end of the base is provided with a stud-bolt e, which can be cast in or screwed in to receive a thumb-nut C, that screws on the stud-bolt for the purpose of making the handle fast to the base. The lower part of the handle is made semicircular, as at 0, so as to allow the same to fit over the top of the base. A hole f, drilled in the center of the circular end, allows the handle to go over the stud-bolt in the end of the base and be pivotally connected thereto.
It will be observed from the above description and by reference to the annexed drawings that the handle A and base E are con; structed of two pieces, and that when connected by the bolt e and nut O the handle is pivoted to said base, and by manipulating said nut C said handle can be thrown in an oblique as well as avertical positi0n,-and that the file F is held to the base by the thumbscrew B and pin D, and when it is desired to use a diiferent file the screw B is withdrawn and the pin I) inserted in the hole of the file, after which the screw B isagain inserted and screwed home. The device is simple in construction, easily operated, and at the same time cheap to manufacture.
Having explained the nature of my invention, what I claim to be new, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is
Thecoinbination, with the handle having the semicircular portion 0, of the projecting circular end having the perforation f, the baseblock E, provided with the rounded portion (1, adapted to engage the semicircular portion 0 of the handle, the thumb-screw B, pin 6, nut O and pin D, and the file having perforations b a, adapted to receive, respectively, the screw B and pin D, all as and for the purpose set forth. I
JOHN REILLEY. Witnesses:
