UNITED TATES ATENT OFFICE. t
HUGO LOEVENBACH, OF MILVAKEE, VISCONSIN- COMBINED RECEIPT AND RECORD BOOK.
SPECIFICATION'formng part of Letters Patent No. 447,884, dated March 10, 1891.
Application filed August 8, 1890. Serial No. 361,424. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern.:
Be it known that I, IIUGO LOEWENBACH, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee, and in the State of \Visconsin,have invented eertain new and useful Improvements in Receipt and Record Books; and I do hereby declare construction and arrangement, as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of an open receipt and record book constructed in accordance with my present invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same opened to expose a different set of leaves from those shown in Fig. l. Y
The objects of my invention are to produce a receipt and record book the entries in which can be manifolded by means of a carbon paper interposed between the detachable and permanent folds of each leaf; also to so construct the leaves as to facilitate selection and turning of any particular leaf or leaves. These objects I attain by virtue of the construction which I will now proceed to describe.
Referring to the drawings, A A designate the covers of a book bound upon a back a,
and between these covers are bound successive alternating series of pages or leaves B C. Each of these pages is formed with a vertical line of perforations or indentations d at about midway of its length, so as to form a permanent part C and a detachable portion B on each leaf. On its upper surface each portion C is preferably provided with a printed blank, and a similar blank is preferably printed on the under surface of the portion B. Thus when used the portion B of each sheet is turned over upon the portion C and a piece of carbon manifolding paper is interposed between the two portions. The writing upon the i printed face of the portion B is thus transferred-.to the printed surface of the portion C, after which the portions C and B are separated from each other on the dotted lines cl.
As in my prior application for patent filed December 9, 1889, Serial No. 333,043, on which this present device is in part an improvement,
therefore the width of the book was extendedV indefinitely, according to the number of separate groups comprised in each book. tain all the advantages of this prior invention and at the same time to obviate the inconvenience sometimes arising from a very wide book, when a large number of these groups were to be bound together, I have devised this present form, wherein each of the leaves B C of each group is arranged in a series of successively-increasing width from front to rear, and at the inner end of the p0rtion C of each of theleaves and integral therewith there is left a blank portion or unperforated stub e of uniform width, which width is at least equal to the distance between the outer edge of the portion B of the upper leaf and the outer edge of the portion B of the lower leaf of each group of series of leaves. Hence as the vertical row of perforations or indentations d are all in line with each other the said inner blank portion e will always accommodate the inturned end of the extension of the portion B of any leaf of the group when the same is folded for use, and said end will lie iatly thereon, instead of buckling up against the inner surface of the back of the book, as would be the case if a narrow inner blank space were provided for a leaf having a wide outer extension.
In order to distinguish the several groups of series of leaves from each other, I preferably employ a similar device to that set forth in my said prior application-that is, I prefer to cut off or out one corner or other part of the extensions of the portions Bof the leaves in each alternate group, as shown at b, leaving the extensions of the portions Bof the leaves in the group above and below the same of full length or size, as shown at c, and in this form of my device I cut off or out a corner or other part of every leaf of the whole series of leaves in the group, instead of merely the wider leaves of each group, as in my said prior application. `While I have shown the lower corners thus eut off or shortened, it yis To ref IOO obvious that I may out off or out any desired portion of said leaf extensions as may be found most convenient or desirable in any instance. Thus the alternate groups of series of leaves throughout the book are readily accessible for turning, use, or inspection, as desired. It is obvious that these leaves may be attached to a single backing-piece, so as to form a tablet instead of a book without departing from the essential spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Iietters Patent, is-
l. A carbon copying receipt and record book consisting of series ot leaves each divided by vertically-arranged perforations or indentations into two portions having' blanks imprinted upon their opposite sides and of successively-increasing width from front to back of each series, substantially as set forth.
2. A carbon copying receipt and record book consisting` of alternating groups of series of leaves each divided into two portions having blanks imprinted upon theiropposite sides and of successively-increasing width from front to back of the book, the series of leaves in one group being arranged with fulllength outer end extensions, alternating with groups having the end extensions of their series of leaves eut off or out for a portion of their length, substantially as set forth.
S. A carbon copying receipt and record book consisting of series of leaves each divided by vertically-arranged perforations or indentations into two portions having blanks imprinted upon their opposite sides, the inner portions ot' said leaves having inner blank portions or stubs of uniform width integral therewith, and the outer portions of` said leaves having outer extensions of successively-increasing width, substan tially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing l have hereunto set my hand, at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Tisconsin, in the presence of -two Witnesses.
HUGO LOEWENBACII.
