A. MOSTERTS= ANTI-SNORING BANDAGE.
N0. 447,695. Patented Mar. 3, 1891.
ANTON nos'rnn'rs, or s PATENT TRASBURG, GERMANY.
ANTI-SNORING BAN DAGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent Nol 447,695, dated March 3, 1891. f
Application filed May 12, 1890. Serial No. 351,395. (No model.)
To all LIZ/b07711 it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTON lilos'rnnrs, a sun'- jectof the Emperor of Germany, residing at Strasbnrg, Alsace, in the Empire of Germany, have invented a new and useful Device for Preventing Sleeping Persons from Snoring, of which the following is a specification.
lieretofore various bandages and devices have been known adapted to keep the mouth shut during sleep to prevent snoring; but in most cases these devices have been in the form of bandages, which have enveloped the head and have caused discomfort to the sleeper.
It is the object of my invention to provide a simple support for the chin, so as to keep the mouth closed without requiring any fastening or supporting device in contact with the face or head, and to this'end I provide a flexible cushion which may be inflated when it is to be used, this cushion having a concaved front adapted to the curve of the neck, with fastening devices extending to the rear of the neck so as to hold the cushion in place,
the cushion being of sufficient extent to form an approximately level topportion, upon which the chin may rest. This cushion finds a support upon the upper part of the chest of the wearer, and provides a very simple and comfortable device which has been found veryeffective for the purpose.
The anti-snoring device represented by the accompanying drawing in perspective view is made from vulcanized caoutchouc material similar to that used for air-cushions, or from other equivalent substance, and essentially consists of a hollow piece shaped as a ring segment, of approximately rectangular or trapezoidal cross-section. This hollow and elastic piece may be inflated with or deprived of air through a mouth-piece a, such as is usual with air-cushions.
To use the improved anti-snoring device the hollow piece or air-cushion is inflated, placed under the chin with its inner side or mantle c, and tied around the neck by means of two suitable bands (I, which are secured to tongues I), connected to the inner mantle c. In this position the tube fills completely the space between chin and chest.
The device is light and handy and can be with facilitycarried 0r packed when freed of air. The bottom of the cushion, or the side opposite to that which sustains the chin when in use, is inclined downwardly, as shown, so as to find a bearing on the upper part of the breast, and thus form a support;
I am of course aware that it is not new to form air and water bags of all shapes and sizes of flexible material adapted to be inflated or filled to cause them to assume the desired shape, and I do not claim so broadly as to include such articles. I
\Vhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States. is
An anti-snoring device consisting of a hollow cushion adapted to be inflated, having a concave front conforming to the shape of the neck, with an approximately level top portion adapted to support the chin, and fastening means for holding the cushion in position beneath the chin.
