A. F;- E-LSEY;
' FENCE. No. 447,672. Patented Mar. 3, 1891.
c ..1 6 KB 6 5 0 o UNITED. STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AARONF. ELSEY, OF BARDXVELL, KENTUCKY.
FENCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 447,672, dated March 3, 1891.
Application filed August 17, 1889. Serial No. 321,088. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AARON F. ELSEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bardwell, in the county of Oarlisle and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in fences; and it consists of the novel construction and combination of parts, as will fully appear from the following description and accompanying illustrations, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of sections or panels of fence embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional View thereof. Fig. 3 is a detached view of one section or panel, (the paling-panel,) the same view also showing the posts and the securing-strip or cleat and its transverse pins atone side. Fig, 4. is a perspective view of a modification.
In the organization of my invention I provide posts AA,which are suitably secured in position, being planted in the ground. To the opposite sides of these posts are fastened vertical strips or cleats a a in any suitable way, said strips or cleats standing, preferably, edgewise to the posts and having through their upper ends transverse apertures 19, which receive pins 1). \Vhile the upper pin-receiving ends of the cleats a a stand above the upper ends of the fence-posts A, yet this is not essential, as it is obvious said ends of said cleats may be below or on a level with the upper ends.of said fence-posts and the same end be attained.
I3 is a panel or section of fence, comprising a series of vertical spaced-apart palings B B, fastened between and to parallel crosspieces or planks B B at their lower and upper ends. The upper parallelcross-pieces or planks 13 B project in the present instance beyond the end palings and rest upon the upper ends of the fence-posts A, (two of them,) while both the upper and lower cross-pieces or planks embrace the vertical strips or cleats a a upon the fence-posts, thus securing the panels or sections of fence in position. The pins 1) (one or more) secure the fence panel or section against vertical displacement.
Instead of the paling fence sections or panels, I may use woven panels or sections, one such being shown at O, the wire strands connecting the slats or rails c of which may be twisted to a greater or less extent, as shown, above the uppermost rail; or they may be passed around said rail or slat without twisting, as disclosed between the remaining slats or rails. In the use of the woven panels or sections the wires are looped at their lower ends through staples or keepers at the lower ends of the fence-posts, while the upper ends of said wires may be looped around pegs or spikes (not shown) driven into the upper ends of the fence-posts; or they may be looped around the upper ends of the cleats or strips a a, as shown. The construction of such a fence panel or section by section may be effected in any known way. One way is in the use of a stake secured alongside of the fencepost and provided with pegs adapted to space the rails or slats and hold them while applying the wire thereto, said stake with its pegs not being he'rein shown.
I do not, however, wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact method of suspending the woven panels as above set forth, as the same may be varied without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention. For instance, a longitudinal strand of wire may be secured upon the tops of the strips or cleats a, the suspending wires being hung from said longitudinal wire, in which case the ends of the rails forming the panel lap over the strips or cleats, some at one side the latter and the others at the opposite side,
such construction being illustrated in Fig. at.-
The panels are thus securely retained against lateral displacement.
I claim as my invention In a fence of the class described, the combination, with the posts provided upon their opposing faces with centrally-disposed permanent vertical cleats or strips of less breadth than the posts, of panels comprising horizontal parallel members having their ends overlapping said cleats and abutting against the opposing faces of the post, said cleats ex-.
tending throughout the height of the posts, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
AARON F. ELSEY. lVitnesses:
THOS. P. HAYs, ARTHUR SHELBOURNE.
