HERBERT II. JESTER, OF BOULDER, COLORADO.
STAPLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 446,523, dated February 1'7, 1891.
I Application filed October 6, 1890. Serial No. 367,241. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
lle it known that I, HERBERT II. J ESTER, of Boulder, Boulder county, State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Staples, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to certain improvements in staples; and it consists in the novel arrangement and combination of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described, and designated in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same. Fig. is a vertical midsection taken on the line or in Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the staple proper provided with props or legs 2 2 Said head 3 has formed on it an additional flanged head 4, which head constitutes the essential feature of my invention. Such a flanged head facilitates in extracting the staple from whatever object in which it may be driven, and also furnishes an additional re-enforcing part for head Said head may be of any suitable shape.
5 represents a stem which connects heads 3 and 4, and may be of any suitable length.
The props or legs 2 2 terminate in sharp points 6 6, which points are formed by cutting away the opposite alternate surfaces of said legs. By having opposite faces of the legs cut away they tend to hold the body of the staple in an upright position when driven in any object, and also when said legs are clinched in opposite directions (as is usually the case) the smooth exterior surface is presented. hen said staple has been driven in any object and it is desired to extractit therefrom, by simply applying any device, such as an ordinary hammer or hatchet havinga recess which fits snugly over stem 5, and by using sufficient force the staple can be removed. The head 4 also forms a percussion surface, which is very advantageous in driving in the staple. By the formation of head 4 on head 3 the latter is enlarged, and the striking force in the operation of driving being brought to bear on head 4 indirectly protects head 3 from the applied force, thereby preventing it from being mashed in and perhaps broken.
Said staple is preferably stamped or out out of a thin sheet of metal adapted for such stamping purpose; but it is obvious that the manufacture can be carried on in many other different ways.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim is A staple having oppositely-sharpened legs 2 2, a swelled head 4, connecting said legs, a stem 5, secured to said head, and a head 4, formed on said stem, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
