EDGAR M. IIICKMAN, OF ALBION, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO THE GALE MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
COLTER-HOLDER FOR PLOWS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 446,452, dated February 17, 1891.
Application filed October 29, 189i). Serial No. 869,726. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDGAR M. IIIOKMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Albion, county of Calhoun, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Colter-I'Iolders for Flows; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
It is the object of my invention to produce a holder for the colter of a plow which shall be applicable to either a wooden-beam plow or an iron-beam plow, and by means of which the colter may be adjusted either horizontally orvertically.
The invention consists in a combination of devices and appliances hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 illustrates a plowbeam and colter with my attachment thereon. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the holder itself. Fig. is a detail view of the tie-plate. Fig. a is a detail view of the plate C.
In carrying out the invention, A represents the beam of the plow and B the colter.
C is a plate shaped on its upper surface so that it will fit the under side of either a Wooden or iron beam of a plowthat is to say, the face is made flat and provided with a recess or groove 0, in which the rib on an iron beam may rest. Slots or openings 0 are provided through which bolts D ext-end upward, where they are passed through slots or openings e in a tie-plate E, which fits across the top of the beam. Ext-ended from the plate C are the arms or flanges C, provided with orifices 0 Between these flanges is a sleeve F held in place by the bolt G. Upon the end of this sleeve is the arm F, provided in its end with the slot f. Extending through the orifice o is the bolt II, which also extends through the elongated slot f, and is fastened upon the opposite end by nuts and washers. Sleeved upon the sleeve F is the arm J, pro-- vided with set-screw j. This arm is prevented from revolving upon the sleeve F by the spline or rib f and yet is movable lengthwise of the sleeve. To the arm J the colter-arm is attached. It will now be seen that by means of my holder the colter may be adjusted in any direction; and the holder is applicableto any size or style of beam-that is to say, the arm .I is movable along the sleeve. Consequently the colter is movable horizontally. By means of the elongated slot and bolt II the sleeve F may be revolved, consequently raising or lowering the colter-point.
The slots in the plate and tie-plate, through which the fasteningbolts D are passed, permit the holder to be attached to any-width beam, and the length of the bolts of course determines the thickness of the beam.
\Vhat I claim isl. A colter-holder for plows, consisting of a plate C, an axially-rotatable sleeve F, suspended by the plate in a horizontal plane, means for locking the sleeve in position when axially rotated to the desired position, and a colter-carrying arm J, connected by a spline with the sleeve and adjustable along the length thereof, substantially as described.
2. In a colter-holder for plows, the combination, with the beam, of the plate C, attached thereto, the sleeve F, supported by the plate and provided with an arm F, the end of said arm being adjustable vertically, and the arm J, engaged on said sleeve by the spline f, but adjustable lengthwise on the sleeve, substantially as described.
3. A colter-hold er for plows, consisting of a plate C, having pendent flanges C, a horizontal bolt G, supported by the flanges, a horizontal sleeve F, rotatable axially on the bolt and provided with means for looking it in a fixed position, and a eolter-carrying arm J, connected by a spline with the sleeve and adjustable along the length thereof, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I sign this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
EDGAR M. IIICKMAN. Witnesses:
H. GALE, R. E. SCHUMACHER.
