UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT L. LARKIN, or INDIANAPOLIQINDIANA.
CHANGEABLE SIGN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 445,838, dated February 3, 1891.
Application filed February 7, 1890. Serial llo.'339,606r (No model.)
To (0% whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT L. LARKIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Changeable Signs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in changeable or adjustable combined price, number, or weight signs; and the invention consists in a card or plate having the name of an article of merchandise,a designation of measure, and an indication of value inscribed or printed on its face, having perforations through its face and having pockets or receptacles in the rear of some of the perforations, in combination with changeable slides or strips indicating quality or numbers, or quality and numbers, and a revolving disk or part carrying fractions or numbers opposite one of the perforations, as will be more particularly hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figures 1 and 2 are front elevations of one of my improved signs as applied to use. Figs. 3 and 4 are sections on the lines a m and .2 .2, respectively, of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is an elevation of the revolving disk.
A is a card or plate having, as shown, the name of an article of merchandise, a sign of measure and indication of price or value suitably placed thereon. This plate or card is also provided with a plurality of holes or perforations a, a, and (L as shown in Fig. 1.
Behind the perforations a and a pockets or recesses b are formed for the reception of interchangeable slides. These pockets are preferably deep orcapacious enough to hold aplnrality of such slides, one behind another. As shown in Fig. '1, the pocket behind the perforation a contains interchangeable car s indicative of quality. The pockets aa' contain changeable numerals for indicating whole numbers of quantity or price, and behind the perforations a the margin of the revolving fractional indicator is arranged, thus making a sign which reads A sugar, 15% pounds for one dollar.
The quality part of the sign may be readily changed by removing the character A and inserting a slide carrying a diiferent character and indicating a difierent quality, and either or both of the numerals in pockets behind perforations a a may be removed and others substituted in like manner, and the revolving fractional indicator may be adjusted at will to suit the price current.
Obviously the numbers or fractions may indicate the numberor quantity of an article which may be sold for a given sum of money, or may indicate the amount in dollars or cents and fractions thereof as the price of the unit of measure.
In Fig. 2 the changeable quality part of the sign is omitted, the whole number and the fraction being changeable or adjustable.
This compound, adjustable, changeable, price-current sign is simple, durable, and a great convenience to merchants in times when prices of merchandise fluctuate.
Having now described my invention, I claim- 1. A sign or indicator consisting of a card or plate carrying the name of an article of merchandise, a sign or name of a measure of quantity and an indication of value, and having a plurality of perforations and pockets behind the perforations, in combination with interchangeable slides carrying integers, and a revolving disk carrying fractions of numbers, substantially as described.
2. A sign consisting of a card or plate having a plurality of perforations and a plurality of pockets in the rear thereof, in combination with interchangeable slides for indicating quality, interchangeable slides for indicating integers or quantity or amount, and a revolving disk carrying fractions of a unit, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT L. LARKIN.
