IMPROVEMENT lN LANTERN-GUARDS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 44,577, dated October 4, 1864.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I,W1LL1AM R. P. CRoss, of Portland, Cumberland county, State of Maine, have invented a new and Improved Lantern- Guard and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specifiration, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a lantern having my improved guard applied to it. Fig. 2 is a top View of the guard detached E'rom the lantern. Fig. 3 is an enlarged view at the guard in an open and closed condition.

Similar letters of reference indicate correipoding parts in three figures.

The object of my invention is to so construct a lantern-guard that it can be readily tdjusted and secured in place around a lan- 'sern or detached therefrom at pleasure. Said guard being formed of two principal parts or nalves united together by hinges at one side and detachable fastenin gs at the opposite side, and, being applied to a lantern, it can be readily removed from the latter when it is desired to clean the glass, as will be hereinaf- :er shown.

Toenable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will describe its consiruction and operation.

The lantern which I have represented in the accompanying drawings consists of a cylindricil cap, A, and base B, applied to the ends of the glass 0 but it should be understood that my invention can be applied by slight modifications to lanterns of various forms, and that I do not desire to confine its application to any particular description of lantern.

The bow-wires a a, which form the main portion of the cage or guard for protecting the lantern-glass O, are suitably secured at their upper and lower ends to semi-cylindrical portions 1) b c c, which are hinged together in pairs and constitute the bands for confining the lantern guard or guard wires in place around the glass 0. The guard, which is at an intermediate point between the bands D O, is made of two wires,d d, both of which are suitably secured to the guards at a, and two of the ends of this encompassing guard have eyes 6 0 formed on them, to one of which eyes a hook, f, is linked, which is used for connecting said ends together when the guard is applied to the lantern. The wire d is curved at one end, so as to work through an eye or loop, 9, which is either formed on or secured to the opposite end of the wire d, as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3.

When it is desired to apply my improved guard to a lantern, the hook f is detached at one end from its eye in the circular guard, and the two halves or portions of the guard are opened, as indicated in red, Fig. 3, the hinges at '1 if keeping these two portions united, and the hooked end of the wire cl slipping through its eye 9, as above explained. When thus opened, the guard can be brought around a lantern and confined thereon by the hook-connection f, as clearly represented in Fig. 1.

By my mode of constructing a lantern-guard it will be seen that the same can be readily removed from the lantern when it is desired to wash the glass A, or for any other reason, and that the guard can be as quickly applied to the lantern again. It will also be seen that all the parts constituting the improved guard can be readily made and put together in a cheap and durable manner, and that the single fastening f will serve to keep the guard in place on the lantern.

I do not claim the features descri' ed and shown in the patents of O. H. Butterfield, September 11, 1855, and December 25, 1855, and W. H. Pierce, February 18, 1862 but Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A lantern-guard constructed so as to open at f and to slide at g, substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.

2. The combination of the sliding hingejoint at g, the. hinged collars b c, and the hinged brace-fastening f, substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.
