HARVEY RAY, OF MOBILE, ALABAMA.
lNKlNG-RlBBON-SPOOL MOUNTING FOR TYPE-WRITING MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 445,265, dated January 27, 1891.
Application filed November 12,1889. Serial No. 330,031! (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that. I, HARVEY RAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mobile, in the county of Mobile and State of Alabama, have invented a new and useful Inking Device for Type-Vriters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to inking devices for type-writers; and it has for its object to consl ruct a device of this class by means of which the ribbon-spool may be conveniently detached when it shall be desired to replace the ribbon with a fresh one or with one of a different color.
The invention, which is designed to be used in connection with the device for which Letters Patent of the United States No. 401,856 were granted to me on the 23d day of April, 1889, consists in the improved construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure 1 is a side elevation illustrating my invention as applied to the frame of a type-writer. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional View of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail view showing the shaft carrying the ribbon spool detached from the frame of the type-writer.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.
1 designates the frame of a type-writer, which is provided with bearings 2 2 for a short shaft 3, upon which is permanently mounted a spur-wheel or beveled wheel 4, to which motion may be imparted in any convenient manner. An additional bearing 5 is provided, in which is mounted a longitudinally-sliding block 6,which is forced in an inward direction by the action of the spring 7, of suitable construction, which is attached to the outer side of the standard or bearing 5.
8 designates a shaft, one end of which has a bearing in the block 6, and the other end of which has a polygonal projection 9, which is adapted to fit in acorrespondingly-shaped recess in the inner end of the shaft 3. The shafts 3 and 8 and the longitudinally-sliding block 0 are necessarily in alignment with each other, as will be seen by reference to the drawings.
Upon the shaft 8 is mounted a ribbon-spool 11, which may be of. the construction shown and described in my previous patent, to which reference has been made above, or the said ribbon-spool may be of any other suitable construction which shall admit of the ribbon being easily and quickly transferred or changed, as occasion may require.
The operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed. hen it shall be desired to change the ribbon for another one, the shaft 8, carrying the ribbon spool, may be easily detached from the frame of the machine by simply moving it longitudinally, thus pushing the block 6 against the tension of the spring 7until the opposite end of the shaft 8 becomes disengaged from the recess 10 and the shaft 3. The said shaft 8 may then be readily detached, thus enabling the ribbon to be removed from the spool and replaced by another one with the least amount of trouble and without danger of soiling the fingers by contact with the ribbon.
I would have it understood that I reserve the right of making such minor changes in the construction of the device as fall within the scope of the invention, and which may be resorted'to without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is In a type-writer, the combination, with the rigid bearings 2 2,the shaft 3, journaled permanently therein and having an angular recess in one end, and a gear-wheel 4 on said shaft between the bearings driven by the writing mechanism, of the additional rigid bearing 5 in alignment with said shaft, the block 6, sliding in said additional bearing, the spring 7, pressing the block toward the shaft, the shaft 8, journaled at one end in said block and having its other extremity angular and removably seated in said recess, and a ribbon-spool 11 on said shaft 8, all substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own Ihave hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HARVEY RAY.
