SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 444,818, dated January 20, 1891,

Be it known that LEDWAED C. CoENwELL, a citizen of the United States, resid ing at Ypsi lanti, in the county of lVashtenaw and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reels, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being` had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specificaion.
My invention relates to all classes of reels in gangs, but it is designed more particularly for use in paper-mills to receive and give off the paper; and it has for its object the irnproved construction of such reels.
The novelty of my invention will be hereinafter set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a reel embodying myinvention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view of one of the reels, reel-shaft, gear, and clutch mechanism.
The same letters ot' reference are used to indicate identical parts in both figures.
.Iournaled in two uprights A is a horizontal shaft B, having rigidly secured to it at proper distances apart two sets of cross-arms C, constituting the reel-frame, in the outer ends of which arms are journaled the reel-shafts D, in this instance four in number, carrying reels E tight thereon.
Between one end of the reel-frame E and the uprights A at one end is a sleeve F, fitted and loose upon the shaft B and provided at its ends with gears G H. The former is driven by a gear I upon a countershaftJ, while the latter is in constant engagement or mesh with gears K, one loosely carried upon each of the reel-shafts D.
By reference to Fig. 2 one form of clutch mechanism for engaging each gear K with and disengaging it from its reel-shaft will be readily understood. Each of the reel-shafts D in this instance is made hollow or has a longitudinal opening, through which extends a rod L, having a grasping-handle at its end oppo site the gear K` Fitting over and feathered upon the opposite end of the reel-shaft D is a sliding clutch-piece M, to which the end of the rod L is connected by nuts, as shown. The hub or web of the gear K has openings Nin Serial No. 356 606. (No model.)
it, which, when the clutch-piece M is pulled toward the gear by the rod L, receive projections O on the clutch-piece, and thereby lock `the gear to the reel-shaft and reel, so that the ,disconnecting them from the reel-shafts at will.
From the above construction and arrangement it will be seen that as the gears K are all constantly revolved by the gear II and can each be locked to its reel-shaft at will any one or more of the reels may be revolved and any one or more of them allowed to remain stationary. Thus in its use in paper-mills the paper may be fed onto one of the lower reels and be delivered from the opposite lower reel, while the two upper ones, filled with paper, remain stationary. Then the lower one, from which the paper is being delivered, becomes empty and the opposite lower one becomes filled, the whole gang may be swung around on the shaft B and the empty reel be brought to the receiving-point and one of the upper lled reels be brought to the delivering-point.
Any suitable device (not shown) may be provided, if desired,for holding the four reels in any position to which they may be turned on the shaft B. It will" be understood that friction-pulleys may be substituted for the gears H and K, and also for the gears G and Lwithout departure from my invention, though I prefer to use gears.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claiml. The combination, with a gang of reels and an independent driving-gear for each reel capable of connection therewith and disconnection therefrom, of a main driving-gear conn stantly meshing with all of the reel-driving gears, substantially as described.
2. The combination of a gang of reels mounted in a revoluble frame, an independent driving-gear for each reel capable of connection therewith and disconnection therefrom, and means for driving all of said gears simultaneously, substantially as described.

3. The combination of agang of reels mounted in a revoluble frame, an independent drivinggear for each reel capable of connection therewith and disconnection therefrom, and a main driving-gear constantly meshing with all of the reel-driving gears, substantially as described.

The con1bination,with a gang of reels provided with driving-gears loose on the reelshafts and clutches for connecting said gears with and disconnect-i ng them from their shafts at will, of a central driving-gear constantly engaging the gears upon the reel-shafts, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
5. The combination, with a revoluble gang of reels provided with driving-gears loose on the reel-shafts and clutches for connecting said gears with and disconnecting them from their shafts at will, of a central driving-gear constantly engaging the gears upon the reelshafts, substantially as and for the purpose speoied.
6. The combination of the supports A, the reel-f rame C, pivotally supported thereby, the
reels E, having shafts D, journaled in the reelframe, the gears K, loose on the reel-shafts D, the clutch-pieces M, movable on the shafts D adjacent to the gears K, the rods L for operating the clutch-pieces, and the gear H for driving the gears K, substantially as and for the purpose described.
7. The combination and arrangement of the uprights A, the shaft B, j ournaled therein, the crossarms C, fast thereto, the reels E, having shafts D, journaled in the cross arms, the gears K, loose upon the shafts D, the clutchlpieces M, feathered on the shafts D adjacent to the gears K, the 'rods L for operating the clutch pieces, the gears G H, carried by a sleeve F, journaled on the shaft; B, the gear 4o H, constantly engagingwvith the gears K, and
the driving-gear I, engaging the gear G, substantially as and for the purpose described.
