Description

(No Model.)
G. 1?. WEIGLE.
DETONATING TOY.
No. 443,927. Patented Dec. 30., 1890.
I ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GOTTHILF F. \YEIGLE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGN- MENTS, TO GEORGE R. LUN'D, OF SAME PLACE.
DETONATI NG TOY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 443,927, dated December 30, 1890.
Application filed September 1, 1890. Serial No. 363,613. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GOTTHILF F. W EIGLE, of the city, county, and State of New York, a citizen of the Empire of Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detonating Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved detonating toy of that class in which the press- [0 ure of air exerted on the sides of the baglike body that is rapidly expanded produces the collapsing of said body and thereby a detonating noise; and the invention consists of a detonating toy formed of two stifi side walls of triangular shape, which are hinged together at their longest sides and connected by a web of paper or other suitable material that is applied to the adjacent shorter sides of the side walls.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved detonating toy, shown in position after the detonation has taken place. Fig. 2 is a side view of Fig. 1, showing it in collapsed state.
Fig. 3 is a front view of the toy in open posi tion, showing the interior construction. Fig. 4 is a side view of the same folded up; and Fig. 5 is a vertical transverse section on the line X X, Fig. 4.
0 Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, a a represent the two side walls of my improved detonating toy. which side walls are preferably made of 3 5 stifi pieces of pasteboard of suitable strength and of triangular shape, and which are connected at their longer sides by means of a muslin or other hinge b, so as to open into one plane or be folded together. To the ad- 0 jacent edges of the side walls is pasted or otherwise attached a web 0, of paper or other suitable material, which web is folded inwardly, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4, when the toy is made ready for operation. The
5 web 0 is preferably made in the shape of a sector of a circle, whereby the size of the same is larger than when the web is made with a straight connecting edge, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 3, so that owing to the increased size of the web 0 a larger quantity of air is taken up by the same when it is used for producing a detonating sound.
For using the toy, the web is folded inwardly between the side walls and the toy then taken hold of at the lower end opposite to that to which the web is applied. It is then passed quickly through the air, so that the side walls are a separated by the entrance of air between the same to such an extent that the folded web can escape from between the side walls into the position shown in Figs.
1 and 2. As soon as this takes place the press- 11 re of the displaced air on the side walls produces the instant collapse and closing up of the side walls, and thereby the detonating 6 sound. After the detonation has taken place the web is folded in again between the side walls, and the toy is ready for the next operation, which can be repeated as often as de-' sired, provided the toy is made of a durable 7o material.
The toy can be made in different sizes, so as to be adapted for the use of children or grown people. It can be used as an effective device when carried in processions, Where it will create considerable merriinent when a larger number will simultaneously operate their toys. The outside of the side Walls of the toy, as well as the surface of the web. may be used for advertisements,in which case the toys may be supplied without charge.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A detonating toy formed of triangular side walls of pasteboard, hinged together at their longer sides, and a web of paper attached to two adjacent sides of said side walls and adapted to be folded up between them, substa'ntially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GOTTI'IILF F. \VEIGLE. Witnesses:
PAUL GoEPEL, MARTIN PETRY.
