SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 443,252, dated December 23, 1890. Application filed September 22, 1888. Serial No. 286,088. (No model.)

To all whom it may con/earn.-

Be it known that I, GEORGE I-I. CHINNocK, of the city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Music-Sheets for Mechanical Musical Instruments, of Which the followingis aspecification.

In mechanical musical instruments Ithe sound-prodncing devices of which are controlled by a traveling music sheet, card, or tablet it has heretofore been necessary to reroll or move the music sheet, card, or tablet backward after playing and before the tune can be repeated or the continuance or change of tune made.

The object of my invention is to obviate the necessity of thus stoppin g the instrument and rerolling or moving baekward the music sheet, card, or tablet in order to arrange the same and at the same time increase the capacity of music sheets, cards, or tablets by providing a music sheet, card, or tablet Which for a given length will have a greater number of tunes than those heretofore used have had, and also enable a tune or tunes to be repeated or continued.

To this end my invention consists, first, in a music sheet, card, or tablet for a mechanical musical instrument, having two sets of perforations representing different tunes, the notes of one tune located between those of the other in the direction of the width of the sheet; second, in a music sheet, card, or tablet for a mechanical instrument adapted to produce two or more tunes by means of the notes of a tune or tunes arranged intermediately between the notes of another tune or tunes in the direction of the width of the sheet, card, or tablet, andvso-arranged that a tune or tunes may be played by moving the sheet, card, or tablet in one direction and the intermediate tune or tunes played by moving the music sheet, card, or tablet in the direction opposite to that in which it is moved for playing the other tune or tunes; third, in a music sheet, card, or tablet adapted to reproduce one or more tunes by means of the notes of a tune or part of a tune arranged longitudinally in one direction, and the notes of the same tune or part of the same tune arranged intermediately in the direction of the width of the sheet, card, or tablet between the notes of the same tune or part of the same tune running in the opposite direction, so that by simply changing the direction of movement of the music sheet, card, or tablet the tune may be repeated or continued.

The accompanying drawing represents a top view of a music sheet, card, or tablet embodying my improvement.

In the drawing similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts.

A designates a music sheet, card, or tablet made of paper, card-board, or other suitable material, and having the ends B and B' constructed in such a manner that they can be attached to reels for rolling and unrolling the same, the holes C and C' serving for the purpose of so securing the sheet to the reels by means of projections or slits in said reels.

The music-sheet A, instead of having` only one series of perforations in its width, has two series. Those of one series a, which are designed to produce a tune or part of a tune when the sheet is moved in t-he direction of the arrow b, are arranged intermediately between those of the other series a', which are designed to produce the remainder of the same tune or another tune or tunes when the sheet is moved in the opposite direction, as shown by the arrow b'.

It Will be obvious th at by simply shifting the reed-board or music-sheet the air-ducts of the instrument can be 'brought opposite to the perforations a or a', as may be desired, and if the direction of the movement of the sheet be reversed the change from one tune to another or the continuance or repeating of the same may be made instantly and Without delay. lt will be seen that this music-sheet is novel, in that it has one or more tunes with their notes arranged intermediately.

By my in vention I enable tunes to be played while the music-sheet is moving in either direction, and thus obviate the long delay required to reroll the ordinary music-sheet.

By the use of my improvement a portion of a tune may be Iplayed by moving the musicsheet in one direction and the remainder of the tune by moving the music-sheet in the op- ICO posite direction, or the whole of one tune may L be played while the music-sheet is moving in one direction and the tune repeated by moving the sheet backward in the opposite direction, or that instead of the repeat another tune maybe played; also, that two or more tunes may be played by havingI the tunes arranged longitudinally with the notes of one tune arrang'ed intermediately between those of another tune or tunes in the direction of the width of the sheet.

Myimprovement has especial virtue, in that when it is desired to play waltz or song music the same tune may be repeated or changed, as desired, without stopljiing or losing time, a thin` impossible with the ordinary sheet.

\Vhat I claim as new, and desire to seeure by Letters Patent, is-

l. A music sheet, eard,or tablet; for a meehanieal musicalinstrument having' two sets of perforations representing'different tunes, the notes ofone tune beingI located between those of the other in the direetion of the width of the sheet.

2. A music sheet,eard, or tablet for a 'meehanieal musicai instrument, adapted to produce two or more times by having' the notes arranged, as described, se that the notes of a tune or tunes are intermediate between the notes of another tune or tuues, 'whereby a tune or tunes may be played by moving,I the sheet in a direetion opposite to that in Which it is moved for 1,)laying` the tune or t-unes arranged intermediately and running in the other direction.

A 'music sheet, card, or tablet fora mechanieal musical instrument, adapted to continue or repeat a tune or times by having the notes of a tune or part of a tune ar ranged intermediately between the notes of the same tune or part of a tune or other tunes in a direetion of the width of the sheet, so that the same tune may be repeated or the balanee of the same tune eontinued by moving the sheetin a direetion opposite to that in which it is moved for playing the same tune or part of a tune in the other direction.
