Be it known that we, CHARLES REUTEE and JAMES L. SOHRUBEN, of Lafayette, in the State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bedclo thee-Fasteners; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters ofy reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification, in which- Figure l illustrates our improved bedclothes-fastening as in use. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section through the same, showing the jaw closed in full lines and open in dot-ted lines. Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are detail views of the severalparts of the fastener separated.

This invention is an improved fastener for bedclothing, especially designed to hold the covers on beds and cribs occupied by children or sick persons, who are apt to toss the covers aside; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of. parts hereinafter clearly described and claimed.

Referring to the drawings by letter, A designates a plate of sheet metal adapted to be fastened to the side rail or other portion of a bedstead where it is convenient and desirable to hold the edges et the bedclothing. This plate has a tongue B formed integral therewith by slitting its outer portion, as :indicated. Above this tongue are two opposite ears O C, formed integral with the plate by partly cutting out small portions therefrom and then striking up these portions. The tongue Bis bent outwardly slightly and constitutes a spring.

The plate A may be secured in position by screws 5 but when it is to be attached to'side rails of the bed it is more convenient to provide it with a hook or bent arm D, springing from the upper portion of plate A above ears C and adapted to catch over the top edge ol the side rail and bind the plate in position thereon.

E designates` the movable clamping-j aw, also made of sheet metal, preferably, and having two opposite inwardly bent lugs F on its sides and near its center,through which passes a pin G, also passing through ears C, that pivotally mounts and secures the jaw on and to plate Aa The upper portion of the jaw rises above the plate and is curved inwardly and slightly downwardly over the horizontal portion CZ of arm D, against which it is adapted to clamp any article when its lower end is forced outward. Its lower end extends over tongue B, and on its extremity are short proj ecting pieces bent to form eyes I-I H, through which passes a wire K, that has a return bent portion 7e between the eyes, forming a crank, and one end J of the wire projects beyond the eye at one side and is bent outwardly at an angle to the eyes and at right angles to portion 7.5, so that by grasping end J, which forms a handle, the portion 7i; can be turned under or from beneath the end of j aw E. Vhen the portion 7a is turned under the arm, it binds on tongue B and forces the lower end of the jaw outward, t-hus moving its upper end forcibly toward the part c of arm 0,*and if any article or edge of the bedclothing has been slipped between the upper end of the jaw and part d it will be securely clamped and held, and the tongue B serves to hold the jaw closed with a spring-pressure.

This device is simple and efficient and its operation will be obvious from the foregoing.

Having described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent thereon, is-

l. In a bedclothes-fastener, the combination of a plate attached to the bed-rail and having an integral spring-tongue, with a clamping-jaw pivotallymounted on said plate, and an angularly-bent wire clamp attached to said jaw and engaging said tongue, substantially as specified.

2. The combination of the plate having a bent portion adapted to engage the bed-rail, and a spring-tongue, with the curved clamping-jaw pivotally attached to said plate and partly overlying the tongue, and the angular wire clamp attached te one end of the jaw and adapted to engage said tongue, all substantially as set forth.
