Armer JOIlN IIL'SLOP, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IM'PROVED 'VENTILATOFL Specification forming To aZZ whom it may concern,.-
Bc it known that I, JOHN HYsLoP, of thc city, county, and State of New Yorlghave invented a new and@l Improved Ventilator; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in theart to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, this specification, in which- Figure l is a vertical section ot' my invention, taken in the line ma, Fig. 2; Fig. 2, an inverted plan ofthe same; Fig. 3, a diagram showing the application of the invention to the lower stories of abuilding.
Similar letters ot reference indicate like parts.
This invention consists in constructin ventilator with louvers a partitions, one or more, louvers or an equivalent device, all arranged in such a manner that due provision is made .for the ingress and egress of the air an'd a current allowed to pass through the compartments of a building, the invention being applicable to. buildings ofany number of stories. v I
A represents a case or box, which is dividedinto two compartments, a a', by a vertical central partition, B, and is provided with a roof or top, b, et' any suitable form or construction. At two oppositesides of the case or box.A there are placed louvers O, any suitable numberat each side. These louvers are of double inclined form, as shown in Fig. 11, the outer parts, c, inclining downward and outward from their inner to their-lower edges, andK the inner parts, d, inclining downward and inward from the upper totheir lower edges, the upper ends or the inner parts, d, slightly overlapping the upper ends ofthe outer parts, c, in order tol prevent the adlnission ot' rain and snow by being driven over the top of the outer part. At the vbottoni of g the t its sides, and with and also with bottom the case orbox A, under each compartment, there are placed horizontal louvers D, those of one compartment being verse direction to those of th inclined in a re` e other,-as shown making a part ot' part otLettcrs Patent No. 318,196, dated September 13, 1864.
in` Figfl. In each damper, E, having cords or chains cA attached plate B, and are connected to or chain, e', by which the dampers may be opened and closed. The air passes through the louvers C at the Windward side of the case or box A, and is deflected downward by the iimerparts, d, and passes through' the bottom louvers, D, of compartment c into the building, the ascending current passing up through the louvers D of the other compartment, a', and out between the louvers C ot' l said compartment, the inner parts, d, deflectl ing the ascending current outward, as indileated by the arrows. By this arrangement f the compartment has a current of air passing l through it, the descending current being kept separate or apart. from the ascending one. The louvers may, when several compartments t in a building on different floorsare to be ventilated, be placed in the side walls, as shown at j' in Fig. 3;\the spaces between the beams i or tiooring-'timbers or vent-ducts, and in eases where the side g walls are not exposed the air may be conducted down and allowed to pass outthrough t pipes g, provided at their upper ends with the ,louvers U. The louvers D at the bottom of (the case or box A nray be dispensed with,
and a board or detlector used instead.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Pat-y ent- 1. A ventilator divided by a partition or diaphragm, in combination with side louvers, .of any desired form, and with or without the bottom louvers, substantially as described".
2. A ventilator divided into twoior more compartments, in combination with the side louvers,*G, constructed as described, and either with or without the bottom louve1s,ll,' as set forth.
