J. WIESBAUER. COMBINED ASH AND CIGAR REGEPTAGLE. No. 441,913. Patented Dec. 2, 1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFF-ICE.
JOSEPH WIESBAUER, OF BUFFALO, NE\V YORK, ASSIGNOR TO MfWIESBAUER, OF SAME PLACE. 1
COMBINED ASH AND CIGAR RECEPTACLEQ SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 441,913, dated December 2, 1890.
Application filed June 9, 1890. Serial No. 354,802. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH VVIESBAUER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New 5 York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combined Ash and Cigar Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the receptacles to which are attached to billiard and other tables for the purpose of temporarily holding a lighted cigar and receiving the ashes thereof.
The object of my invention is to produce a convenient receptacle of this kind which I 5 may be swung out of the way when not re quired, and which can be manufactured at small cost.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is .a perspective view of my improved cigar-re- 2o ceptacle attached to the edge of a table. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the body or box of the receptacle. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the receptacle applied to a table.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts 2 5 in the several figures.
A represents the top of a table or other support to which the receptacle is attached.
B is a rectangular metallic box or drawer forming the body of the receptacle, and C is a plate or cover closing the open upper end of the receptacle and provided at its inner end with an extension 0. The cover C is pivoted to the under side of the overhanging edge of the tabletop by a screw d, passing through 3 an opening in the extension of the cover. The receptacle can thus be swung outwardly beyond the edge of the table to expose the same, or inwardly under the same so as to be out of the way. The extension of the cover is preferably provided with a marginal rim for stiffening or strengthening it, as represented in Fig. 3. The side walls of the receptacle are provided at their upper edges with outwardly-bent flanges or lips c, and the cover 0 is provided at its longitudinal edges with inwardly-projecting flanges or lips'f, which overlap the flanges of the side walls, By this construction the receptacle is suspended from the pivoted cover and capable of being detached from the cover by sliding it outwardly on the cover.
The receptacle is constructed of sheet metal, and its side walls are disconnected from the end walls, the side walls being connected only to the bottom of the receptacle, as shown in Fig. 2. These side walls are bent outwardly, as shown in said figure, so that the same must be pressed inwardly toward each other, in order to insert the flanges of the receptacle between the lips of the cover. 6o The elasticity of the sheet metal permits the sides of the receptacle to be compressed, and causes the same to again spring outward when the receptacle is withdrawn from the cover. By this construction of the receptacle the flanges thereof are caused to exert an outward pressure against the lips of the cover, creating aforcible frictional contact between the contiguous flanges, which prevents the receptacle from sliding too freely on the cover and becoming displaced.
The cover G is provided on its upper side with a shallow longitudinal cavity or depression g forreceiving and retaininga cigar, and with one or more slots or openings 71, through which the ashes are deposited into the receptacle below.
The cover or supporting-plate with its flanges is stamped from a single blank of sheet metal, and the receptacle with its lips or flanges is also stamped complete from a single piece, forming a cheap receptacle composed of only two parts.
The receptacle is readily emptied, when filled .with ashes, by simply withdrawing it from the cover.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination, with the rectangular box or receptacle having elastic side walls provided with longitudinal flanges or lips, of go a cover adapted to be attached to a support and having marginal lips or flanges which engage with the lips of the receptacle, substantially as set forth. 4
2. The combination, with the sliding box 5 or receptacle having elastic side walls disthrough which the ashes drop into the receptacle, substantially as set forth.
\Vitness myhand this 3d dayof June, 1890.
JOSEPH VIESBAUER.
