CARTRIDGE FOR BREECH-LOADING CANNON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL SEABURY, lieutenant l'nil'ed States Navy, at present residing at Bergen Point, in the county of ll'udson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cartridges for Breech-Loading (.annon, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The object of my invention is to provide a cartridge for breech-loading cannon which obviates the necessity for a gas-check in the breech of the cannon, and which, while being less expensive than the fixed ammunition heretofore used for breech-loading ordnance, possesses in itself an effective gas-check.
My invention consists in a cartridge-case made partly of cloth and partly of a cupshaped metal base, substantially as hereinafter described.
Figure l in the accompanying drawings represents a side view of a cartridge constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 represents, on a larger scale than Fig. 1, a central section of the metal base of the cartridge, a portion of the cloth which constitutes the greater portion of the case, and the means of attaching the cloth to the base. Fig. 3 represents a transverse section in the line .r 00 of Fig. 2. Fig. i represents a section corresponding with Fig. 2, illustrating the method of and means for attaching the cloth portion of the cartridge-case to the metal base thereof.

A designates a cloth bag, which constitutes the greater portion of the length of the cartridge-case; 13, a cup-shaped metal base, and (l a disk of wood or other material, prefer ably a tough wood, as maple, of a circumferenee somewhat smaller than the interior of the cup-shaped base 13. The said disk (I has the cloth bag A attached to it and serves for the attachment of the said bag to the metal base.
The cup-shaped metal base I; may be of brass, copper, or other metal. The depth of its cup may be about equal to or somewhat less than the diameter of the cartridge. It has a stout bottom or breech b and a flange Z) of suitable form for beingtaken hold of by the extractor employed in the gun, and has provided on the inner face of its bottom or breech a central externally-screw-threaded nozzle or boss (F. The said base is represented in Fig. 2 as having its sides gradually reduced in thickness toward the front edge, as having the front edge turned slightly inward in rounded form to facilitate its entrance into the breech of the gun in loading, and as having itslongitudinal profile slightly tapered to fit the tapered counterbore with which the chambers of most breech-loading cannon are constructed.
The bag A consists of a straight tube made of cloth with both ends open. The edges of its rear end are represented (see Fig. 2) as secured around the circumference of the disk 0, which disk is secured to the breech I) of the metal base 13 by means of a flanged not I), which is screwed onto the screw-threaded nozzle o of the base 1), the said nut being countersunk into the disk (I, and being provided with notches d, as shown in Fig.3, into which to insert a forked wrench for the pun pose of screwing it. up.
The rear edge of the bag A may be secured around the circumference of the disk C in an y suitable manner; but I prefer to secure it in the manner which I will now proceed to describe by providing a circumferential groove in the said disk and by winding several times around it within the said groove a binding-wire a. To attach the bag to the disk, I first turn it inside out and present its rear edge in a forward direction over the disk, as shown in Fig. i, then wind the wire a around it within the groove, and afterward reverse the bag by pulling it forward right side out over the disk and over the wire (l,as shown in Fig. The disk and the attached rear end of the bag are then placed within the cup-shaped base ii and secured to the breech or bottom 1! thereof by screwing the not I) on the nozzle IF. When this nut has been screwed up, it is lirmly secured by screwin g a wood-screw 1 (see Fig. 3) through one of its notches (I and into the disk C. The bag A is then filled with powder from its open forward end, which is afterward tied up, as shown at f, in the same manner in which the forward end of a cloth cartridge is tied up.
A cartridge thus constructed may be provided in the center oi its base, as shown at g in Fig. 2, with a primer of any suitable kind.
In a cartridge constructed as described the metal cup-shaped lniseeonstitiutcsa perfectly effective gas-check and alt'ords convenience for the insertion of a primer directly into the cartridge itself, and is much less expensive than the fixed amniunitiim heretofore employed in breech-loadint, ordnance. After such a cartridge has been used the cupshaped base 15 and the nut I) may be again used in the manufacture of a new cartridge.
\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, in a cartridge for breech-loading cannon. of a cup-shaped metal base, a cloth bag, a disk to which the said bag is attached independently of said base, and a fasteningby which the disk is directly secured to the breech of the said base independently of the bag, substantially as herein set forth.
2. The combination, in a cartridge for breech-loadingcannon,of a cup-shaped metal base, a disk seen red to the breech of the said base and having a groove in its edge, a bag, and a binder by which the bag" is seen red with in the said groove and over which the bag; is reversed, substantially as herein described.
3. The combination, in a cartridge, of the cup-shaped metal base I provided with the screwthreaded central nozzle 1/ the cloth bag A, the disk to which the sides of said bag are secured, and the nut l), by which said disk is secured to the said metal base, substantially as herein set forth.
