I. FOX.
BOX.
Patented Nov. 11, 1890.
@Y M new N zfmw mm UNITED STATES BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 440,147, dated November 11, 1890.
Application filed March 15, 1890.
.To a/ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, IVAN Fox, a citizen of the-United States, residing in the city and count-y of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsyl- Vania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to boxes which are provided with lids hinged to them,in contradistinction to boxes the lids of which slide in grooves, and it is the obj ect of my invention to produce a simple, neat, and inexpensive box the lid of which is in effect hinged, but in the construction of which I dispense with ordinary hinges or pivot pins, and substitute therefor continuous. rubber bands or their equivalent.
In the accompanying drawings, I have shown and in this specification I describe, a good form of a convenient embodiment of my invention, the particular subject matter claimed as novel being hereinafter denitely specified.
In the accompanying' drawings, Figure l is a view in perspective of a box embodying my invention, the lid being represented as lifted. Fig. ,2 is a central transverse sectional view through the box of Fig. l, with the lid closed.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, A is a box, which may be of any usual form, construction, or material. In the upper inside edge of one of the sides of this box is formed a groove or channel, d, fora purpose hereinafter explained, and in the upper inside edges of both of the ends of the box, are formed ledges or lid rests ctx.
B is the lid of the box, which on its front edge is preferably provided with a thumb notch h, by means of which it can be easily raised, and the rear edge of which is, as shown in Fig. 2, beveled or otherwise suitably conformed to fit within the groove or channel a of the box.
C C are lretaining pins, cleats, hooks, or keepers, driven into, or otherwise fastened to, the under side of the lid of the box, and any suitable number of which may atsuitable distances from each other be employed. Into the inner face of that side of the box which contains the groove or channel, a, I similarly apply pins or keepers C CX corre- Scrial No. 344,047- (No model.)
sponding in number and disposition to the pins or keepers in the lid. Keepers of the form shown in the drawings conveniently answer my purpose, but keepers of other forms may be employed.
D D are gum bandsxengagedwwith and stretched tautpbetween corresponding keepers of theli'dland box "body, and serving to effect the hinging of the lid to the body.
I do"'not"restrict myself to gum or other elasticv bands, but contemplate using also spiral springs.
The lid is intended to [it within the Walls of the box and when down the lid rests upon GLX being as to its upper surface, flush with the upper edges of the box walls.
From the foregoing description it will be manifest that when the lid is opened its beveled rear edge will freely turn Within the groove or channel o, the rubber bands being stretched, and that when closed it will be held in place by said bands. In Whatever position, therefore, the box is placed, the lid when closed will be held tightly to its seat.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
l. As an article of manufacture, a box, the lid of which is detachably hinged to the body through the intervention of rubber bands engaged With an interior face of the box and with the inner face of the lid ata fixed point approximately midway between its front and back edges, substantially as set forth.
2. As an article of manufacture, a box embodyin g an inwardly facing horizontal groove in the upper portion of its rear Wall, and a lid adapted to said box, the rear edge of which is fitted to and free to turn within said groove,
which lid is hinged to said body through the intervention of rubber bands connected with an interior face of the box and the inner face of the lid, substantially as set forth.
3. As an article of manufacture, a box enibodyin g an inwardly facing horizontal groove in the upper portion of its rear wall, and embodyingledges upon the inner faces of its end walls,-and a lid of such size as to t Within the box and upon the ledges, the rear edge of which lid is fitted to and free to turn Wit-hin said groove, said lid being hinged to said body through the intervention of rubber bands Connected with an interior face of the box IOO and the inner face of the lid, substantially as set forth.
4. As an article of manufacture, a box embodying an inwardly facing horizontal groove in the upper portion of its rear wall, and einbodying ledges upon the inner faces of its end Walls, and a lid of such size as to fit Within the box and upon the ledges, the rear edge of which is fitted to and free to turn within said groove, which lid is detachably hinged to said body through the intervention of rubber bands engaged with the interior of the box and With the inner face of the lid at a fixed point approximately midway between its front and back edges, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination to form a box, of abody in the upper edge of the back side of which IVAN FOX.
In presence of WM. C. STRAWBRIDGE, J. BoNsALL TAYLOR.
