Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
ALBERT BODE, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
PICK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 438,877, dated October 21, 1890.
Application filed March 24, 1890. Serial No. 345,084. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALBERT BQDE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Picks, of which the followingis a specification.
Myinvention relates to a means for attaching handles to picks and similar implements; and it consists in providing a handle-socket whereby the pick-head may be securely held in place and readily detached for sharpening or replaced if broken.
The invention will be first fully described in connection with the accompanying` drawings, and will be particularly referred to, and pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, in which like parts are indicated by similar reference-letters wherever they occur throughout the various views, Figure l is a side elevation of a pick made according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section taken through the handle-socket, showing the pick-head and attaching-bolt in elevation. Fig. 3 is an end elevation.
'Referring to the parts, A is the pick-head, Which is of ordinary construction, except the eye, which is made only large enough to receive the attaching-bolt B, which secures it to the handle-socket C. The handle-socket is made of malleable cast-iron. Itis cored out to receive the handle D, and the hollow portion of itis provided with bosses c, which are perforated to receive the transverse bolt E, which passes through the bosses and handle to secure the latter in place. The head of the handle-socket is recessed to seat the enlarged central portion of the pick-head and is axially perforated to receive the head-securing bolt B.
In constructing my pick-head-it is forged to the form shown by dotted lines, Fig. 3, after which it is heated and placed in a female die-block, which is the counterpart of the center portion of the pick-head, being formed like the upper end of the handlesocket O, except that the lugs c extend up to the outline of the pick. The center bolt-hole is then punched and a drift driven in to expand the center portion of the head to fill the recess in the die. Thev head thus formed will snugly tit the recess in the handle-socket, and when the nut B is tightened the head is securely held in place.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination, substantially as speciied, with the axiallyperforated pick -head having bulging sides, of the socket C, having lugs c', extending from the socket upon opposite sides, curved to embrace the bulging sides of the pick-head, forming the seat for the pick-head, and perforated to receive the headsecuring bolt, the head A, seated in the socket having its sides embraced by the lugs c', and the securing-bolt B to secure the head to the socket.
2. The handle-socket C, having projecting curved lugs c to embrace the sides and form the seat for the pick-head axially perforated to receive the head-retainin g bolt B and transversely perforated to receive the handle-retaining bolt E, substantially as hereinbefore set forth.
ALBERT BODE.
