IMPROVEMENT IN LU BRICATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 43,859, dated August 16, 1864.

The nature of my invention consists in a spring-valve oil-cup permanently applied to the hubs of loose pulleys, wheels, andto millgearing of like character generally. Such oil-cup readily receives the lubricating-oil, contains a considerable quantity, secures the oil from dust and light waste particles, as well as prevents its escape at the place where it was introduced, and also supplies the thus confined oil in a regular manner to the bearings on which the pulleys revolve, or in which the shafts turn.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, 1 will proceed to de scribe the same with reference to the drawin gs.
I take a piece of brass tubing, A,'with one end closed, and drill a small hole, a,in the said closed end, 'as represented. Around the outer circumference of the open end of the tube a screw-threatbb, is cut. Into the tube A a coilspring, B, is fitted so as to rest on the perforated end of the tube, be free of the sides of the tube, and extend out beyond the open end of the tube, as represented. Within the upper coils of the spring 13 a semi-spherical or a conical valve, (l, has its stem snugly fitted, as
shown. 'This valve is inclosed by means ofa screw-cap, D, theunder orinner side of which has a semi-spherical seat, 0, for the valveO to fit against. The cap D screws upon the end of the tube A, and by screwing it down to agreater or less extent the force of the spring upon the valve will be graduated. So if the spring at any time loses its effective action it can be restored to its active condition. In the center of the capa hole, (6 is drilled. This hole is of smaller diameter than the valve, and it is the office of the valve to keep it closed at all times, except when oil is being introduced into the tube.
The device thus constructed is applied to the hub of a pulley or wheel by boring a hole, E, through one side of the hub and inserting the end of the tube into this hole, as represen ted.
From the drawings it will be seen that the end of the tube, when inserted in the hole E, comes in contact, or nearly so, with the shaft F of the pulley G, and therefore the oil will flow from hole a directly upon the shaft. The control of the escape of oil is effected by the shaft F, as will be evident.-
To introduce. oil into the tube A, it is only necessary to place the end of the hand oil-can upon the valve 0, and with said end depress the valve so as to open the hole to. This done, the oil will flow from the hand oil-can into the permanent oil-cup A until this cup is filled, when, by withdrawing the hand oil-can, the spring will close the valve against the hole a.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the spring valve oil-cup, pulley or wheel G, and shaft F, substantially as described, so that while the oil is confined from dust and other matters by the spring-- vaLve, the lubrication will be controlled by the shaft, as set forth.
