CHESTER PROUTY, OF INSTANTER, PENNSYLVANIA.
'DETACHABLE HANDLE FOR CROSSCUT-SAWS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 437,620, dated September 30, 1890.
Application filed May 13, 1890. Serial No. 351,600. (No model.) I
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHESTER PROUTY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Instanter, in the county of Elk and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable Handles for Orosscut-Saws; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in that class of removable saw-handles for use on crosscut-saws; and it consists in certain novel details in construction and arrangement of the several parts, as will be hereinafter more specifically described in the specification, pointed out in the claim, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple and convenient handle for crosscutsaws that will be durable, easy on the hands of the user, and may be readily applied in position upon different saws or detached therefrom, and when so applied to the saw-blade will hold the same securely and without injury thereto.
In carrying out my invention I proceed as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, formin g a part hereof, wherein- Figure 1 is a view in elevation of a sawhandle for crosscutrsaws constructed according to myinvention, and Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the same. Fig. 3 represents the several parts of the handle in enlarged detail.
The letter A designates the wooden handle made cylindrical and of any convenient length. The lower end of this handle is reduced, as at a, to receive a ferrule B, centrally through the head Z) of which ferrule, as well as into the end of the handle, is a hole, as at a The head I) of this ferrule is of greater diameter than the body, and said bottom is case-hardened or chilled, so that wear thereof at this point is prevented and its edge is rounded, as shown at b.
Transversely through the reduced end a of the handle A is a hole, as at G, to receive a nut D, through which nut the screw-threaded end e of the loop E passes. This nut D is, as shown in Fig. 3, cylindrical and formed with a small lateral projection at one end, as at d, that is received into a corresponding seat in the reduced end a of handle A, as at (1, whereby the .turning in the hole of said nut is prevented. The loop E is, as before stated, formed with a screw-threaded shank e, and the said loop is enlarged at its outer end to form a broad bearing, as at e, for the saw-blade, and this broad part 6' is of malleable or wrought iron, without temper, so that breaking thereof is prevented, and the enlarged end of the ferrule gives a greater bearing-surface for the edge of the saw-blade, and such bearing-surface being smooth injury to the saw is prevented.
To apply the parts in position, the nut D is first inserted into the hole (3, with its projection d arranged longitudinally of the handle. Then the ferrule is driven up tight upon the end of the handle A. The screw-shank e of the loop E is now screwed into nut D by turning the handle until the same is brought tight against the saw blade. V
The nut being simply a cylindrical body with screw-threaded hole through it that is received into a round hole in the handle, no special fitting of these details is necessary, as would be the case were the nut of square form. The cost of production is therefore reduced.
The ferrule fitting over the nut prevents its accidental removal, and the projection on the end of the nut that embeds itself in the wood prevents the turning of the nut in its seat.
Having thus described my invention, I claim'as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In a removable handle for crosscut-saws, in combination, the wooden handle A, having reduced-end a, longitudinal hole a, and transverse hole 0, ferrule B, having enlarged casehardened head I), with rounded edge I), and longitudinal hole corresponding to the hole in the handle, and with socket d, cylindrical nut D, having projection d, and loop E, formed with screw-shank e and enlarged end 6', all constructed and arranged to operate as and for the purposes described.
CHESTER PROUTY.
