IMPROVEMENT IN WATCHMENS CLOCKS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 43,616, dated July 19,1864.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM WINTER, of Plainfield, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Watch-Clock; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable any person skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this snecincation, in which Figure 1 represents a face view of my in vention, the glass being partly broken out to fully expose the face. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same.

This invention consists in the application to the face of a clock or watch ot a movable disk, which is made of slate or other suitable materialcap tble of receiveing and showingthe mark of a pencil or other suitable instrumentand marktd with the figures from 1 to 12, the same as the main dial of the clock, and which revolves with the hour hand under a hole cut into the edge of the lid, which is secured by means of a lock and key in such a manner that said disk or tell-tale dial can only be reached through the hole in the lid, and that when a night-watchnmn or other person having a similar charge is instructed to pass the clock at certain stated hours, and to make a mark with a pencil on the tell tale dial whenever he passes, the employer or superintendent is enabled to read off on said dial at what hours the watchman has passed the clock and made his marks, and byopening the lid of the clock thetell-tale dial can be readily cleansed and rendered lit for future use.

A represents a clock of the usual construction, with a round, octagonal, or othercase, or made in any desirable manner. Its lid B swings on a hinge, a, and it is provided with a slotted lug, b, to closedown over a staple, 0, through which the ring ot'a padlock can be passed in order to fasten said lid 3 or the lid may be arranged in any other desirable manner so that it can be closed down and fastened, and that it can only be opened by the person having charge of the works or of the place in which the clock is to be used. The dial 0 is narked with the liguresl'rom I to .Xll in the usual manner, and the minute hand d and hour-hand e revolve over it in the same manner as on a common clock.

1) is the tell-tale dial, which is made of slate or other suitable material capable of rcceivin g and showing a mark made with a slate-pencil or other similar instrument. This tell-tale dial is marked with the figures from 1 to 12 in reverse order, and it is made to revolve with the same speed as the hour-handof the clock, but in a direction opposite to the same. It must be remarked, however, that by the addition of another wheel or pinion thetell-tale dial can be made to revolve in the same direction as the hourhand, and in this case the figures on the same would be arranged in regular order, the same as on the main dial. Said telltale dial revolves under a hole, f, in the lid of the clock, and this hole is large enough to insert a slate pencil or other instrument to make a mark on the tell-tale dial.

lhe -watchman is instructed to pass the place in which the clock is secured at stated hours, and to make a max k'on the tell tale dial whenever he passes. If he fails to pass at the proper time and makes a mark on the tell tale dial, it will he seen at once when he passed, or if he omits to make his mark the omission will be also observed. 13y thesemeans the superintendent or person having charge of the place is enabled to keep a record of the time when the watchman passes the spot or room in which the clock is put up, and any carelessness 0r remisness of the watchman will beimmediately. observed, and by opening the lid the tell-tale dial can be easily cleaned and it is ready for future use.
