UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EUGENE I. BLOUNT, OF OAMBRIDGE, MASSAOHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO THE BLOUNT MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF MAINE.
DOOR-CHECK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.
Applicatiou filed April 19, 1890.
435,678, dated September 2, 1890.
Serial Na. 348,606. (No model.)
T0 all whom it ma y concern:
Be it known thatl, EUGENE I. BLOUNT, of (Jambridge, in the county of Micldlesex and State ofMassaehusetts, have inventecl eertain new and useful Impr0ve1nents in Door Oheeks, of Wl1i0h the following is 21 specificati0n.
My invention relates t0 cl0orel1eeks of the kind or elass in which liquid is employed as an element t0 resist the free action of the door-closing spring.
It is tl1e object of my invention t0 provicle sueh improvements in door-checks of the kind mentionecl as Will more certainly p1oteet tl1e liquicl-chamber against leakage tl1an heretof0re.
It is also the object of my inventi0n t0 provide mproved 1neans f0r regulating 0he valves an l liquiclporis in the operation of the door-check.
T0 these ends 1ny inventi0n consists in providing ohe cap screwed upon the outer end of the liquiclchamber with an offset on its in- 11e1 upper e(lge, plaoing paeking in the saicl offset, ancl arranging a ring upon the cylinler above tl1e cap, so that it may be screwed clown upon the said packing, thereby rendering the conneetion between the eap ancl tl1e eylincler thorouglfly liquiltight.
My invention als0 consists in enlarging 01 chambering the upper p01ti0n of the neek 01 hearing eonnectecl with 01 0rmecl in the partition of the cylincler di"iding the liquid an l spring eharnbers, and througl1 which the 0scillatory shaft passes, placing paeking in the said ehzunber around the saicl shaft, and providng a nut hzwing its lower fase inelinecl inwarclly, which nut is adaptecl to be screwecl down around the oseillatory shaft upon the saicl paeking, so as to make it impossible f01 liquid in the lquid-ehzunber to leak between the oseillatory shaft and its hearing.
My invention also eonsists in providing tl1e partition in the liquid-eup With a duplex valve eontrolling he ports th1011gl1 wl1ich tl1e liquid flows in the aet of elosng the door.
My invention als0 consists in the constructi0n :1ncl relationship of parts and features in door-checks, whereby the same are rendered more eflieient thzm heretofore.
l\iy invention will fi1st be described in 0011 neetion with the aecompanying drawings, and the letters of referenee marked tl1ereon, forrning 21 part of this speeifieation, and tl1en be pointed out in the appendecl claims.
In the drawings, Figu re 1 is 21 top plan view of my improved door-check attacl1ed to a door and door-easing. Fig. 2 is a perspectix*e "iew of alle cylinder and a part of its equipments in verted, tl1e cup 011 the end of the liquid-ehamber being rexnovecl. Fig. 3 is a-top plan view of the wing 01 piston eonneeted with the os cillat-ory shaft at 1gh' angles tl1ereto ancl adapted t0 operate in the liquid-chamber. Fig. 4: is a vertical eentral se0t-ional vierv of the cylincler and its equipments. Fig. 5 is aview of one side, and Fig. 0 of the opposite sicle, of the partition in the liquid-chamber.
lhe same letters designate the sa1ne parts 0r features, as the case may be, in all of the views.
In the drawngs, a designates tl1e cylinder dividecl by the partition binto aliquid-cham bei 0 and a spring-chamber d, into or through Wl1ich eylincler tl1ere extends an oseillatory shaft e, aclapced to be actuated by the spring f, t0 close the door through the medium of arms 01 1evers conneeting tl1e sai l shaft wibh the door, as will be understood by tl1ose skillecl in the art 11p011 2111 inspeetion of Fig. 1 of tl1e drawings. As is herein shown, tl1e eylincler a is vertieally arranged With the springchamber uppermost, thongl1 a reversed 01 other arrangement may be made of the cylinder, as eireumstances may suggest 01 require.
Affixed in the liqu lehan1ber 0 is a parti ti0n g, extending from the side and top and bottom of the ehan1ber to the oseillatory sl1aft e, ancl conneeted with the said. sl1aft ancl ex tending at rigl1t angles tl1ereto is a Wing 0r pistn 71, aclaptecl, as the sl1aft is oscillated, L0 be moxecl in the chamber f10n1 one side of: the partition to the other. Valves and ports are proviclecl in the saicl partition ancl wing orpiston, so that the liquid in the cha1nber will flow With eomparative freedozn from one side of the partition 2111d wing to the other when the door is being opened, bui; offer quite considerable resistanee to the movement of IOO the Wing 01 piston by the spring f in closing the door. This pressure of the wing up0n the liquid renders it necessary to make the chamber c quite liquid-proof. T0 attain the last-mentioned end at the point between the cap i, screwed upon the lower end of the cylinder and the cylinder-body,-I offset the upper inner face of the cap 2, as at j, and provide an annular packing-strip 7a, adapted to fit in said ofiset, and, it may be, to extend above the upper edge of the cap, ztnd construct and arrange a ring Zabove the packing, so that it mzty be sorewed down thereon with great force by means of a spanner operating on the ribs or projections m, 01 by other suitable means. The neck er hearing n for the osoillatory shatt e, oonnected with the partitions b, I enlarge or ohzunber in its upper part, into whioh and around the said shaft is tapped a nut 0, the lower faee of whieh is inclined inwardly and upward, so as that it may act upon a packingp in the lower part of the chamber around the shaft to form & liquid-tight conneotion at chat point. The upper end of the nut 0 is sq1ared or otherwise construoted to enable it to be engaged by a wrench or other means, and be turned thereby. The Wing his provided with a valve q, adapted to operate over a port formed in the said ring, allowing the liquid in the chamber 0 to flow freely through said port as the wing moves in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 2, and the door is being opened, but closing said port as the wing moves in the oppositedrection in the eet of olosing thedoer.
Ports r s are formed in the partition g, the extent to which the formeris opened or closed being controlled by a valve t, adapted to be moved in one direotion by a spring u and in the opposite direction by a screw o, tapped into the cylnder and operating against the valve or a pin 01 projeotion thereon, though it is obvious that the screw might be made to engage the said valve and move it in both direetions, and the extent to which port 3 is opened being controlled by the valve 10, operated upon by a temperature-spring 00, as is described and claimed in my application for a patent Serial N o. 305,674, filed April 2, 1889. It will thus be seen that the partition gis provided with a duplex valve, one being automatically operated by the temperature of the liquid and the other controlled mechanioally through the medium of the thurnb-screw v. As the spring f operates to close the door and to move the wing or piston h in a direction opposite to that indicated by the arrow in Fig. 2, the port in the s2tid win 9; will be closed by the valve q, as statecl, so that the escape of the liquid from one side of the partition g to the other will be through the comparatively small ports 7 8, and consequently the lqnid Will flow through said prts slowly, and the resistance of the liquid to the action of the spring will be oomparatively great. By this means a slow closing of the door without slam or jar is effeeted. By means of the mechanicztlly-operated valve 25 the port or port-s inthe partition g may be adjusted to snit circumstances, while the Vah're wis operated automatically in accordeunce with the temperature and consequent consistency of the liquid in the liquid-chamber.
In order to effect a partial olosing of the door with a comparatively quick motion I cut away a portion of the hubof the wing g, as at 1 for a part of the distance ztround said hub so that when the door is fully opened an apertnre 01 port will be formed at the cutaway point y, between the hub and adjacent edge of the partition g, through whioh portg the liquid nmy freely flow fro1n one side of the partition to the other until the door approaches a closed positionwhen thecut-awzty point y Will hawe passed the partition and the hub Will operette in quite close proximity to the partition, so that the only escape of liquid Will be through the ports r s, While the door is being lorought to fully closed position. The upper end of the wing-hub on the side opposite to that at whioh the said hub is cut away, as at 3 is provided with a groove z, sothat any liquid that might leek or be squeezed through between the upper face of the hub and the part with whioh it moves in contact 1nty not be forced up into the spring-ohamber d, but run out through the sgtid groove z.
It is obvous that changes may be made in the form and arrangement of parts comprising my invention without departing from the nature or spirit thereof.
I do not herein clain1the subject-matter of rny pending application for patent filed April 2, 1889, Serial N o. 305,674, Which oomprises a door-check embracing in its construction a eylnder adapted to hold suitable liquid, an oscillatory shaft in said cylinder, a par*ition in the said cylinder extending parallel with said shaft, a wing 01 piston attaohed at right angles to the said shaft to operate on the liquid, and a suitable port to permit the flow of liquid as the shaft is oscillated.
Having thus explainecl the nature of my in vention and described 2l way of making and using the same, I declare chat what Iclairn is 1. The combination, with the oylinder a, of the screwcap a ring Z, having a serewthreaded connection with the cylinder, and an interposed paoking, as set forth.
2. The combination, with the oylinder a, of the screw-cap 11, ofset, as atj, string l, having a screw-thread connection with the cylinder, and a packing 7e, arranged in the offset of the cap aud. interposed between the same and the ring Z, as set forth.
3. The combination, with the oylinder a, and the oscillatory shaft e therein, of the partition Z), provided with the chambered bearing for the said shaft, the nut 0, tapped in said ehzunber and having its lower face 01 end upwardly and inwardly inclined, and the paekng p, as set forth.
4. A door-check embracing in its construc tion a cylinder adapted to held suitable liquid,
