G. ELTON.
GAGE 000K.
Patented Sept. 2, 1890.
q vivtmeaoeo v alito mr wi UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE ELTON, OF YOUNGSTO\VN, OI-IIO.
GAG E-COCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 435,488, dated September 2, 1890.
Application filed June 28, 1890. Serial No- 35'7,049- (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE ELTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Youngstown, in the county of Mahoning and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Water Gages or Cocks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in water gages or cocks designed more especially for use upon waterboilers for testing the height of the water therein.
It has for its object, among others, to provide a simple, cheap, and efficient device of this character, in which the parts may be used in three different ways, thus adding greatly to its usefulness and distributing the wear.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be specifically defined by the appended" claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a top plan of my improved device. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the same with portions broken away and parts in section and parts in side elevation. Fig. 3 is a cross-section through the body of the cock.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring now'to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the body of the cock, which has a tapered externally screwthreaded portion a, adapted to be screwed into the boiler and can be set at any desired angle. The main portion or body of this cock is provided with lugs 12, which are arranged so as to afford a passage-way between them both in the direction of the cock and at right angles thereto, and these lugs are perforated in both directions, as shown-in Figs. 1 and 2, so as to provide for the reception and retention of the sliding bar in whichever position it may be placed.
The cock has a passage-w ay 0 therethrough in the direction of its length and a passageway therethrough at right angles thereto, as seen in the drawings. Two of these passageways are normally closed by means of removable and reversible plugs B, which are'provided with polygonal portions to receive a wrench or other tool, as shown in Fig. 1. The other passage-way is provided with a removable nipple O, which engages an internal thread, all the passage-ways being internally threaded.
D is a weight or handle for restraining pressure. It is provided with a projection or enlargement d, as seen best in Fig. 2, which is slotted, as shown in said figure, and E is a slide-bar working in the slot of this enlargement and adjustable lengthwise therein, being designed to be held in its adjusted posi: tion by the set-screw F, as seen in Fig. 2. This slide-bar is pivoted between the lugs on the cock by means of a removable pivot-pin.
G is a rubber stopper fitted in a recess in the end of the weight orhandle D,and against which the end of the nipple rests, as shown in Fig. 2.
The parts may be readily changed from the position shown to any one of the other two by simply removing the plugs and nipple and placing them in the desired position, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1.
WVhat I claim as new is- 1. The combination, with the cock having passage-ways at right angles to each other, of the removable nipple and the weighted handle pivoted on the cock and adapted to bear against the nipple, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the cock having a screw-threaded portion and provided with passage-ways at right angles to each other, of the weighted handle, the removable nipple, and the adjustable slide-bar, as set forth.
3. The combination, with the cock formed with lugs arranged at right angles to each other, of the removable adjustable slide-bar, the removable nipple, the removable plugs, and the weighted handle to which the slide- -bar is adj ustably connected, substantially as shown and described.
4. The combination, with the cock having screw-threaded portion and lugs arranged at right angles to each other and passage-Ways In testimony that I claim the above I have at right angles to each other, of the removable hereunto subscribed myname in the presence nipple, the removable plugs, the weighted hanof two witnesses.
dle having slotted enlargement, the set-screw, GEORGE ELTON. 5 and the adjustable s1ide-bar pivoted to the \Vitnesses:
- cock and passed through the slot of the han- R. '1. MCKELNEY,
dle, substantially as shown and described. HARRY BONNELL.
