UNITED STATES ATENT, OFFICE.
THOMAS M. GORDON, OF CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS.
MECHANICAL MOVEMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 434,442, dated August 19, 1890.
Application filed June 4, 1890. Serial No. 354,229. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS M. GORDON, of Cambridge, county of Middlesex, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Mechanical Movements, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings represcntinglike parts.
This invention has for its object to provide a novel mechanical movement; and it consists'in the combination, with one or more gears and a rack in mesh therewith, of rolls mounted on shafts carried eccentrically by the said gears, as will be described.
Figure 1 is an under side View of my rue-- ehanical movement as adapted to one class of work; Fig. 2, a side view of the same, and Fig. 3 a modification to be referred to.
Referring to the drawings, one or more pairs of gears at, having hubs ct, supported in a suitable frame A,-receive between them and are in mesh with the double rack I), each of the said gears carrying eccentrically a shaft or stud e. (Herein shown as extended through said gears and having mounted upon it a feed wheel or roll (I, as shown.)
The mechanical movement herein shown and described maybe used for a feed or guide mechanism in a machine, the material being passed between the rolls (1, which will serve as feed or guide rolls. The distance between the feed wheels or rolls (Z of each pair is varied by means of the rack b, which when moved in the direction of arrow 25 rotates the gears a to bring the shafts or studs 0, carrying'the rolls, nearer to each other, and when moved in the direction of arrow 26 retates the gears in the opposite direction to carry the shafts or studs and their rolls farther from each other.
It will be seen that any number of pairs of feed wheels or-rolls may be employed, the
distance between the wheels or rolls of each pair being increased or diminished at once by movement of the rack 19. r
I do not desire to limit this invention to a double rack having gears upon each side, as a single rack having gears upon one side only may be employed, as shown in Fig. 3, the mechanical movement in this form being adapted for use as a feed or guide mechanism in planing and similar machines wherein the work is required to be forced upon a table or upon a knife or other tool or device; neither do I desire to limit myself to the number of rolls or to the particular form and construction shown, as it is evident any other feed or guide device may be employed other than the wheels or rolls shown, and the eccent-ricity of the shafts or studs carrying the same may be adjusted to accommodate the movement to various classes of work.
I cla'im l. The combination, with several gearwheels to, and a rack in mesh therewith, 0f shafts carried eccentrically by said gearwheels, and wheels or rolls on said shafts, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the gear-wheels a, and a rack between them and in mesh therewith, of shafts carried eccentrically by said gear-wheels, and wheels or rolls on said shafts, substantially as described. I
3. The combination, with the gear-wheels a, and a rack in mesh therewith, of a shaft car ried eccentrically by the said gear-wheels, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
THOS. M. GORDON. Witnesses:
EMMA J. BENNETT,
BERNIcn J. NoYEs.
