v FASTENER FOR PAPER; 7 No. 434,047. Patented Aug. 12, 1890.
mnum II llllllm UNITED STATES L ATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH M. JONES, OF PARIS, KENTUCKY.
FASTEN ER FOR PAPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 434,047, dated August 12, 1890. 7
Application filed December 3, 1889- Serial No. 332,460. (No model.) 7
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH M. JONES, of Paris, in the county of Bourbon and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fasteners for Paper; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the inven tion, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improvement in fasteners for securing together sheets or strips of paper or other material and for similar uses; and the invention consists in certain other features of construction and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a view in perspective of a holder or receptacle and a piece of the gummed tape projecting from the opening in the holder. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the holder and view in side elevation of the flat-sided rolls of gummed tape, and Fig. 3 is a detached view of one of the rolls of the tape-fastener.
A represents a roll of tape, the latter consisting of a strip of paper or other material out into continuous strips of any desired length and gummed on its opposite sides and coiled into a roll having flat sides a a. The outer or free end of the gummed tape is stuck to the outer coil to prevent the tape from unwinding and thus retaining it intact for shipment or while being handled. Any desired number of rolls A are placed on a spool B, which is formed with a single head 1 The spool is inserted within the holder or receptacle O, which may be made of wood, paper, or metal, and which is provided with a slit D, through which the tape is drawn from the inclosed rolls. On one end of the spool is placed a follower E, which is made of metal or wood and serves as a self-adjustable guide to retain the rolls in place within the holder.
The rolls andspool are secured within the holder by the detachable head F, which is secured within the end of the case or holder in any desired manner, though preferably the displacement.
head is turned slightlylarger in its diameter than the inner diameter of the end of the holder. As the holder is slitted,it is capable of being sufficiently expanded to receive the removable head and to firmly retain it by its frictional contact therewith against accidental The rolls are placed in avertical series on the spool, and, owing to their being formed with fiat sides, are easily rotated when the tape is unwound therefrom, the friction due to the rolls resting upon each other not being sufficient to cause the tape to break while being unwound from the roll. After the tape of one roll has been entirely unwound and used, the outer end of the tape of another roll is detached and inserted through the slit and is thus ready for use. In this way any desired number of rolls or fasteners may be used, and when the contents of the holders are exhausted a new series of rolls may be placed in the holder. The tape is preferably made of a narrow strip of paper, which is gummed on its opposite sides either before or after the paper is cut into strips.
When it is desired to use a fastener, it is only necessary to unwind and sever from the roll such a length of the tape as will serve as a fastener for the particular purpose required, and hence it will be seen that fasteners of any desired length for different purposes may be produced from the continuous strip or tape.
As it is evident that many changes in the construction of the holders and the relative arrangement of parts might be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention, I would have it understood that I do not restrict myself to the particular construction and arrangement of parts shown and described; but,
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with a holder or casing having a slotted side and a cover therefor, of a series of independent flat-sided rolls of tape, each tape being gummed on its opposite sides, and a loose follower located Within the holder or casing and engaging a In testimony whereof I have signed this 10 flat side of one of the end rolls, substantially specification in the presence of two subscribas set forth.
2. The combination, with a holder or casing and a vertical spool, of a series of flatsided rolls of tape, the latter being gumnied on the opposite surfaces, and a follower engaging the side of the end roll, substantially as set forth. I
ing witnesses.
JOSEPH M. JONES.
