OIL GAN.
No. 433,613. Patented Aug. 5, 1890.
Inventor. Mlrwfkw/E BarMM UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NEBRASKUS HOMES BARNES, OF WAIIOO, NEBRASKA.
OIL-CAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 433,613, dated August 5, 1890. Application filed October 16, 1889- Serial No. 327,149. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NnBEAsKUs I-IoMEs BARNES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vahoo, in the county of Saunders and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Oil-Can, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in oil-cans.
The object of the present invention is to provide oil-cans having a-pump to raise the oil with a suitable receptacle to receive the dripping from the spout of the pump and to convey the oil back into the can; and, f urthermore, to provide means for retaining the pump in the can during the operation of pumping.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of an oil-can constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a plan view. Fig. 4 is a detail enlarged view showing the connection bet-ween the hook and the projection. Fig. 5 is a similar view showing the particular form of projection employed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, A designates an oil-can which is provided with a suitable force-pump B, that is adapted to be withdrawn from the can and to be turned to bring the mouth of its spout I) over the opening of a lamp, and also to carry the mouth, after filling the lamp, over a drip-cup C, which receives the oil dropping from the spout b and conveys it back into the can.
The top a of the can is slightly conical or sloping, and the drip-cup 0 consists of a vertical flange or sides, which are arranged around a perforation a, that is adjacent to the lower side of the cup, whereby all the oil dropping into the cup will run through the perforation a.
The pump is provided with a depending hook D, which is arranged beneath the inner end of the spout b, and is adapted, when the spout is swung out from the sides of the can, to engage a projection or ridge d at the pumpopening and near the edge of the can to prevent the pump being withdrawn from the can while being operated.
From the foregoing description and the accompanying drawings the construction, operation, and advantages of the invention will readily be understood.
hat I claim is The combination of a can having a conical or sloping top and provided with a vertical cylindrical flange arranged near one of the sides of the can and having its upper edge horizontal and its lower edge conforming to the sloping top, said top having a perforation arranged within the flange near the lowest portion thereof, and a pump arranged near the side of the can and arranged to be turned to bring the mouth of the spout beyond the sides of the can or over the vertical flange, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
