FLANGE FOR STOVE-PIPES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 431,754, dated July 8, 1890.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. OPLINGER,
a citizen of the United States, residing at WVadsworth, in the county of Medina and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Flange for Stove-Pipes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to flanges for stove-pipes employed at the entrance of the latter into the stove-pipe holes of chimneys, and among the objects in view are to provide such a flange as to be capable of clamping tightly upon the pipe, and thus compensating for any discrepancy in the relative size between the pipe and flange, and furthermore to provide means for securely locking the flange in position. v
\Vith the above objects in view the in vention consists in certain features of construction hereinafter specified, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective of a pipe provided with a flange constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2is a rear elevation of the flange in detail. Fig- 3 is a vertical section. Fig. t is a detail in perspective of the two locking-arms. Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 2, but showing the parts in a difierent position.

The flange 1 is of circular shape, having the central opening 2 and the usual external ornamentation, and is provided with a loose bail 3, the terminals of which are connected at diametrically-opposite sides to the frame in this instance, by being bent over the same, as at 4, or by any other well-known means. The central portion of the bail extends to the rear for some distance and then is bent into ahook 5, substantially parallel with the flange.
In applying the flange the bail is passed through the stove-pipe hole of the chimney, the hook being Within the chimney, and a cross-bar 6"is inserted between the hook and the inner surface of the chimney and extends transverse the stove-pipe hole of the chimney. The bail is preferably formed of spring-wire, so that the hooked portion thereof is readily sprung over the bar, and thus a snug connection between the chimney and the flange is effected without the use of nails or screws or any special fitting of the flange to the stove-pipe hole. served that when thus mounted, which may be accomplished with great facility, an easy removal of the flange is also insured.
At diametrically-opposite sides of the flange, and upon the inner surface thereof, there is pivoted, as at 7, the outerends ofa pair of quadrant-shaped or curved arms 8, formed of sheet metal, the inner ends of the arms overlapping each other and provided with a registering longitudinal slot 9. A small lever 10 is pivoted, as at 11, eccentrically to the flange upon its outer surface, and is provided with a pin 12, which projects inwardly through a curved slot 13, formed in the flange, and terminatcs in the registering slots formed in the curved arms, thus serving to loosely connect said arms. v
14 represents an ordinary stove-pipe inserted in the flange, and it will be apparent that by swinging the cam-lever downward the curved arms will be swung downward, so as to close upon the stove-pipe, binding the same snugly in position within the flange, and also serving to close any opening that may have been formed by reason of any discrepancy in the sizes of the stove-pipe and flange opening. The cam-lever is formed of spring metal, and has its free end slightly bent, so that when swung over upon the surface of the flange it is maintained in any of its adjusted positions by means of its own resiliency, forcing the free end of the same against the exterior surface of the flange.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. The combination, with a stove pipe flange adapted to be applied to a chimneyhole, a spring-wire bail connected with the flange and projecting through the hole and terminating in a hook, and a rod adapted to be inserted under the hook and between the same and the inmr surface of the wall of the chimney, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with a flange, of opposite quadrant-shaped arms having their free ends pivoted at diametrically-opposite points to the flange and their adjacent ends overlapping and slotted, and a cam-lever formed of spring metal pivoted to the flange and having a pinmounted in a curved slot formed in It .will also be obformed in the flange and loosely connected with the slots in the arms, substantially as specified.
