WITNESSES ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
\VILLIE O. WVHITNEY, OF GLENS FALLS, NEXV YORK.
SHUTTER-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming e of Letters Patent No. 431,301, dated July 1, 1890.
Application filed November 9, 1889- gerial No. 329,752. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIE O. WHITNEY, of Glens Falls, in the county of WVarren and State of New York,'have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sash and Blind Fasteners Combined, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to a style of blindfastcner in which the device is held in locked adjustment by the engagement therewith of the lower sash of the window.
Heretofore in blind-fasteners that are held locked by a lowered sash which impinges on a projecting portion of the blind-fastener the shutter or blind could not be secured unless the sash engaged the limb of the fastener. This in practice is objectionable, as during the heated term of the year it is frequently necessary to leave the window-sash raised for ventilation of an apartment, while as a measure of safety the slatted blinds are closed and locked.
The nature and principal object of my invention consist in the provision of a blindfastener which will automatically latch fast to and secure a .closed window-blind when the lower window-sash is raised, and also afford,
drawings, forming a part of this specification,
in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of a portion of a window-frame, a slatted blind, and adjoining wall of the house having the improved sash and blind securing devices located in closed adjustment thereon, the section being taken on the line w w in Fig. 2; and Fig. 2 is a plan view in section of the window-sash lock and blind-fastener adj usted to retain these parts in closed position, the section being taken on the line 1 'y in Fig. 1.
A is the subsill, and A the frame, of a window adapted to receive and retain'in sliding adjustment the lower sash B, the folding slatted blinds C being thereto secured to swing in the usual way by hinges. (Not shown.) Upon the sub sill A the gravity-actuated catch a is retained to rock longitudinally by engage ment of its trunnion-journal ends a with the bracket-plates b, said plates being attached to the sub-sill by screws 1) or other means.
As shown in Fig. 1, the catch a is constructed with a limb c, which projects outwardly and upwardly from the journal ends a,terminating in a latch-hook c, that projects its hook end inwardly or toward the trunnion-journal ends a, having its upper edge sloped downwardly and outwardly, whereby it is adapted to engage and interlock with the depending and mating hook d, rigidly formed upon the bracket-plate d, which latter is secured upon the inner surface of slatted blind 0, near its free edge, in alignment with the hook c, as shown in Fig. 2. The limb c is inwardly extended from the journal ends a, affording an elongated limb 0 which is projected upwardlyatc near these journal ends, and thence inwardly, of a proper length to lie below the lower sash B, the terminal end 0 of the limb 0 being flattened, as shown, thus adapting it to rest upon the sub-sill A and be engaged by the lower edge of the sash B. To add weight and strength to the limb c aprojecting bead e is, formed on the upper edge of the same, said limb, by reason of its superior weight, normally holding the latch-hook c elevated, to be automatically depressed and engaged by the hook at when the blind Cis closed. A latch-hook f, identical in form with the hook end 0', is produced on a short limb f, that is outwardly curved at f to afford afinger-hold for manipulation of the hook f. At f oppositely-projecting journal ends are formed 011 the sides of the limb f, which journals are loosely engaged by the bracket-plate g, that is suitably shaped to afford rocking support for the limb f. The bracket-plate g is fastened to the sash B at a proper point for engagement with the upwardly-projecting rigid latch-hook h, that is integrally formed upon the plate h, whereby the hook h is affixed to the window-sill or table A screws 7L being inserted through the plate and into the sillfor this purpose.
open, the act of closing it will depress the northe hook end c'impossible until the sash is again elevated. The closure of the sash B automatically locks the same by the engagement of the latch-hooks f and it, this sashlock thus coacting to render the blind-fast- 61161 secure.
As before intimated, the blinds C may be fastened and the lower sash B left elevated for purposes of ventilation, which renders the device convenient and serviceable, adapting it to meet all necessary requirements in a simple and practical manner.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with a window-frame, its
sub-sill, its lower sash, and a blind or shutter, of an unyielding hook attached to and depending from the blind or shutter, and an upwardly-rocking catch-hook adapted to be automatically engaged by the unyielding blind hook and provided with an integral Weighted extension projecting inwardly from its rocking supports, said rocking hook being normally depressed by gravity at its inner end to elevate its integral catch-hook and adapt its inner end to be engaged by the lower Window-sash, substantially as set forth.
YVILLIE O. VHITNEY.
