Description

(No Model.)
D. MGVEAN. GAR COUPLING.
No. 431,019. Patehted June 24, 1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL MCVEAN, OF BATAVIA, NEW YORK.
CAR-CCU PLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 431,019, dated June 24, 1890.
Application filed May, 2, 1890. $erial No. 350,348. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL MCVEAN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Batavia, in the county of Genesee and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Couplings, of
which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention pertains to an improvement in car-couplings; and it consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of the parts, as hereinafter described, and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my car-coupling. Fig. 2 is a front view thereof, showing it as applied to cars; and Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation of the same.
In my car-couplingdraw-headAis suitably secured to each end of the freight-cars or to the platforms of passenger cars, and in all cases the coupling is disposed in guides and provided with bumper-springs, as is ordinarily the custom.
Draw-head A has cast integral therewith recessed standards B, having vertical recesses a a provided therein for reception of trunnion 11, cast integral with cylinder 0.
Cylinder C is provided with leg d, projected obliquely downward therefrom, whereon, having an enlargement c, it is designed to re; ister with the inner face of the upper side of the outer part of the draw-head slot, the leg and enlargement serving to hold cylinder 0 in an inclined position for reception of the coupling-link, and for this purpose weight f is also rigidly secured to near the upper part of the cylinder in any ordinary manner.
In coupling cars the crank is swung up, which lifts coupling-pin f out of the drawhead and lodges it upon the edge of vertical slot 9, the weighted cylinder and the coupling-pin being thrown into the inclined position shown in Fig. 2, and when the coupling strikes leg 01 it forces it back, thus throwing cylinder 0 from an inclined into a vertical position. The coupling-pin thereupon drops down through the link, and is held between the corresponding orifice g in the bottom of the draw-head and slot 9 immediately above it, as shown.
The double crank 9 which is secured to the lateral walls of freight-cars, or it may be to a suitable support or standard erected on the platform of passenger-cars, consists of a metallic bar folded centrally to form an outwardly-projecting loop h, and in continuation fashioned in right-angular form and pivotally secured by staple j, as shown.
The coupling-pin f, which is disposed in cylinder O, has integral therewith staple 7, to which chain 3' is secured, the chain in continuation being secured to ring it on loop h, and thence projected through staple Z, where it is held in position by ring m at top of the car to enable the coupling and uncoupling to be performed from the top of freightcars. Thus constructed when coupling link It strikes against leg 61 the couplingpin is instantly thrown into a vertical position and passes through the coupling-link, as aforesaid, and the coupling of the cars is completed; and in uncoupling the cars it is only necessary to pull up the chain or to lift up the crank, which can be readily done without endangering the life of the operator.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a car-coupling, the cylinder having trunnions for pivotally securing it and the coupling-pin in the recessed standard, subtially asshown and described.
2. In a car-coupling, the weighted cylinder for carrying the coupling-pin connected by a chain to a crank, the chain being secured by a staple, substantially as shown and described.
3. The pivoted weighted cylinder having a leg for the coupling-link to impinge for releasing. the coupling-pin, substantially as shown and described.
4. In a car-coupling, the recessed standards of the draw-head for reception of the trunnions of the cylinder, having an inclined leg, substantially as shown and described.
5. The combination of the draw-head having recessed standards, the cylinder, the coupling-pin, the chain as secured, and the double crank, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DANIEL MCVEAN.
Witnesses:
RICHARD R. LosEE, JOHN THOMAS.
