` J. D. BURKHART.
GULTIVATOR.

ATTORNEY E mw@ me noms pneus co., Puorumo., msmfmron, o, z:A
NITED STATES PATENT JOHN D. BURKHART, OF DAYTON, VASHINGTON.
CU LTIVATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 430,828, dated June 24, 1890.
Application tiled September 9, 1889. Serial No. 323,471. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN D. BURKHART, of Dayton, in the county of Columbia, fashington Territory, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Oultivators, of -which the following is a specitication.
My invention consists in a new and improved cultivator, which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a top plan View ot' my improved cultivator. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section on the line 2 2, Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the plow-beam.
The same letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the iigures.
Referring to the several parts by letter, A indicates the Jfront, A the back, and A2 the side pieces of the rectangular frame of my cultivator.
B indicates the tongue, which is secured across the frame, as shown, and upon the rear end of the tongue is secured the springseat C, as shown.
D indicates the plow or shovels of the cultivator, which are formed at the back with the wide open space D2, leaving the long diverging win gs D D. These plows or shovels are secured to the lower ends of curved beams E, which are curved, as shown in the drawings, and to the upper ends of which are bolted the rear converging ends of connecting-rods F F. Upon the front bar A of the cultivator-frame are bolted stirrups G, upon which the eyed forward-diverging ends of the connecting; rods F and F are pivotally mounted. The front upper end of each beam E is formed with a transverse slot E', and the rear ends of the rods F F have a threaded bolt F2 passing through them and through this slot E, by which arrangement the ends of the beams E can be adjusted up 0r down, and secured by tightening a nut F3 on the end of each bolt F2, to cause the plows to run deep or shallow.
rlhe connecting-rods F are made so much shorter than the rods F that they will bring the plows to which they are secured in advance of the plows to which the rods F are secured. The plows are arranged alternately, as shown, those with the shorter rods F in between the plows having the longer rods-F, by which construction and arrangement a greater number of these plows with their long wings can be secured in the frame than if it was attempted to place them side by side.
Between the rear ends of the side pieces A2 of the frame is j ournaled a roller II, having short arms II in line with the plow-beams, the outer ends of these roller-arms being connected by chains I to the plow-beams below them. On this roller is secured a handlever J, and it will be seen that by drawing back this lever by the hand the driver can readily and instantly raise all of the plows clear of the ground, and can hold them thus elevated by allowing a spring-catch K on the side of the lever-handle to engage with a rack L.
The axle M is Ain two parts or sections, t-he sections being mounted in bearingsN on the under side of the side pieces A2, and also mounted at their inner ends in a box O. The shaft-sections have on their outer ends the usual iron Wheels I.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
rIhe improved cultivator, consisting of the tongued frame, the axle and wheels, the plows D, each having lateral wings D D', their curved beams E, and diverging connectingrods F F', rigidly attached to said beams, the stirrups (l, attached to front of the frame, and each serving as point of attachment for one of the rods of a beam, the roller H, having arms H', chains I, hand locking-lever, and rack L, all as shown and described.
JOHN D. BURKHART.
