BERTHOLD ZEITSOHEL, OF BERLIN, GERMANY.
REG EN ERATIVE GAS-LAM P.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 430,723, dated June 24, 1890.
Application filed June 12, 1889. Serial No. 314,022- (No model.) Patented in Belgium June 6, 1889, No. 86,542; in Norway June 6, 1889,1T0. 1,390; in $witzer1and June 6,1889, No.1,089; in England June 6, 1889,1101 9,412, and in Spain June6, 1889,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BER'rHoLn ZEITSCHEL, a subject of the King of Prussia and German Emperor, and a resident of Berlin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Regenerative Gas-Lamps, (for whichI have obtained patents in Switzerland, No. 1,089, dated June 6, 1889; in England, No. 9,412, dated June 6, 1889; in Spain,No. 9,666, dated June 6, 1889; in Belgium, No. 86,542, dated June 6, 1889; in Norway, No. 1,390, dated June v6, 1889, and for which I have filed applications in Germany, May 25, 1889; in Austria-Hungary on June 6, 1889, and in Russia May 25, 1889,) of which the following is an exact description.
My invention relates to an improved construction of lamps having two circular burners, the manner of the burners and air-inlet co-operating to avoid the formation of smokeblack, thus effecting a more thorough combustion of the gas.
In order to make my invention more clear, I refer to the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters denote similar parts throughout the different views.
Figure 1 is a vertical section through the middle of the lamp. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section through the lamp along the line a E in Fig. 1.
The gas is led by means of supply-pipe 19 into the chamber it, formed by cover so, screwed into the under part a. Into this under piece :0 are fixed tubes at a and b b h, constituting the outer and inner burners. This chamber at is screwed onto the cast piece y, adapted to form the various passages s, s s and s for the air-circulation. The form of the cast piece 'y will be clearly seen in Fig. 2. To the lower part of piece y is attached ring Z), encircling the outer burner 17. To the under side of the bottom of chamber at is fixed cylinder y, having holes 8 s, and to the lower end of which ring a is fixed, encircling the inner burner a. g
The cast piece g which serves to regulate the air-circulation, is screwed into ring 00', to which cap 00 is also attached. The frame R,
for holding glass 0", is hinged to ring as, which also contains sheet-metal ring 00 The sheetmetal cap. or shade w is suspended on the cast piece y. The sheet-metal cap m together with ring a and shade as, causes the air to circulate to the burners in a zigzag manner, whereby the same is more thoroughly warmed. The air enters through holes h h in ring 00'. To the top part of piece y is fixed the chimney c of the lamp.
The air enters the lamp through the openings h h in ring 00, passes then over ring on and under ring-shade 00 .through the passages s s s s in the cast piece y, from whence a part of the air passes downward between the rings a and b for supplying the outer ring-burner, while a part passes on through the holes .9 sin piece y downward inside the tube a in order to supply the burner a. As will be seen, the air then passes in the direction of the arrows through the canals z z in the cast piece y and up the chimney.
The advantage of alamp of this construction is that by means of the two circular flames burning one within the other, as shown and described, the air being led to the burners will be compressed to a certain extent, or rather retained between the lines of circumference of the inner and outer flames, and again between the outer flame and lower edge of ring b, so that only as much air as is necessary for the complete combustion of the gas will circulate, and thus the formation of smoke-black in the lamp will be prevented. On the other hand, by a too-rapid circulation of the air the combustion of the gas is imperfeet, burns extravagantly, creating smokeblack, and thereby stopping up the flues or air-passages and causing them to become smaller, and the lamp will in consequence burn badly after having been in use a short time.
Having now particularly described my invention, what I claim is In regenerative gas-lamps, the combination of the inner circle of tubes a ct a, outer circle 1) b I), both ending in and receiving their gassupply from chamber at, having supply-pipe 13, piece 00 with cc'v'ei' 00, ring on", having air In witness whereof I haYe hereunto set my inlets h h h, piece .y, having air-inlets s 8, hand in presence of two wltnesses. cylinders y, having air-inlets s 8, cylinders a and b, sheet-metal ring 00 shade w, cap 00 BERTHOLD ZEITSOHEL' 5 chimney c, and glass ring and glass 1", in the Witnesses:
manner and for the purpose substantially as B. ROI, described. THEODOR H'EESE.
