Description

(No Model.)
J. LAWYER.
GRATE AND FIRE BOX FOR STOVES.
Patented June 24, 1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JUSTIN LAWYER, OF COLDW'ATER, MICHIGAN.
GRATE AND FIRE- BOX FOR STOVES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 430,658, dated June 24, 1890.
Application filed January 23, 1890- Serial No. 387,785. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LJUSTIN LAWYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Goldwater, in the county of Branch and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Grate and Fire-Box for Stoves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to grates and fireboxes for stoves and furnaces; and it has for its object to construct a device of this class which shall be simple in construction and which may be easily operated to break and expel the clinkers and ashes.
\Nith these ends in View, the invention consists in the improved construction and 00111- bination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure 1 represents the perspective view of the hearthplate of a stove or furnace equipped with my improved grate. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective detail view of a portion of the grate and the operating-lever.
Like numerals-of reference indicate like parts in all the figures.
1 designates the hearth-plate or base-ring of a stove or furnace, which may be of any suitable construction, and is mounted upon the legs or supports 2. The ring 1 is provided with downwardly-extending hangers 3, provided at their lower ends with flanges 4, and at their upper ends with shoulders 5. The flanges 4 serve to support the oscillating grate 6, which is made of open-work cast-iron, and which is circular in shape, as shown, in order to enable it to be conveniently rocked or oscillated upon its supportingflanges. The grate 6 has a central circular opening 7, which is surrounded by a downwardly-ere tending annular flange 8.
9 designates an annular ring or casting, which forms the bottom of the fire-pot, and which is provided with an exterior annular flange or shoulder 10, by means of which it is supported upon the shoulders 5 of the hangers 3 in such a manner as to enable it to be oscillated when desired. The said ring or casting 9 is provided with an annular series of fingers 11, extending downwardly to Within a short distance of the periphery of the grate. The ring 9 is also provided with an in wardlyextending arm 12, which is slightly curved, as shown, and which extends tangentially to the circular opening 7 in the grate. This arm, which may be designated as a followerarm, serves, when the ring 9 is rotated in the manner to be hereinafter described, to draw the contents of the fire-box toward the center of the grate, where it will be more thoroughly consumed, thus avoiding the collection of ashes and dead einders at the outer edge of the fire-box.
13 designates an operating lever or handle,
of the grate in such a manner as to enable it to be vibrated slightly in avertical direction. This lever or handle is confined in a bail 14 depending from the grate.
15 designates a dog or pawl, which is 0011- nected pivotally to the lever or handle 13, and which is provided with a tooth 16, which, when the outer end of the lever or handle is raised, is adapted to enter between any two of the downwardly-extending teeth or fingers 11 lated conjointly with the grate 6. The tooth 16 is beveled on one side, as shown at- 17, so as to slip over the fingers 11 when the lever or handle is moved in one direction. This is to prevent clinkers and the like from accumulating in the acute angle between the ring 9 and its inwardly-extending arm 12. The said ring is capable of being rotated only in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 1 of the drawings, when the tendency of the arm 12 will be to sweep the contents of the fire-pot toward the central discharge-opening 7.
Suitably mounted upon the annular flange the grate, is a rectangular frame 18, having flanges 19, which form bearings for a sliding screen-frame 20. The latter is provided-with a handle 21, by means of which it may be conveniently reciprocated in its bearings. It will be seen that by reciprocating this screenframe the contents of the'fire-box will be effectually sifted, while by withdrawing the said screen-frame from under the dischargeopening 7 the contents of the fire-pot may be dumped or discharged.
which is suitably attached to the under side 8, surrounding the discharge-opening 7 of of the ring 9, which latter may thus be oscil- The operation and advantages of this invention will be so obvious from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, as to require no further detailed explanation. The construction of the device is extremely simple, and it may be easily operated, and by means thereof clinkers and the like may be effectually broken up and discharged into the ash-pit without the necessity of putting out the fire.
I desire it to be particularly understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction of details herein described, but reserve the light to any modifications which may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. The combination of a base or hearth plate having downwardly-extending hangers, with an oscillating grate and an independently-oscillating ring mounted upon the said hangers, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the base or hearth plate having downwardly-extending hangers, and the oscillating grate and independentlyrotatable ring mounted upon said hangers, the said ring being provided with an inwardly-extending follower-arm, substantially as set forth. I
3. The combination, with the base or hearth plate having the supporting-hangers, of the oscillating grate having a central dischargeopening, and the independently-rotatable ring having the inwardly-extending followerarm tangential to said discharge-openin g, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination, with the base or hearth plate having the supporting-hangers, of the oscillating grate having the central dischargeopening, and the independentlyrotatable ring having an inwardly-extending followerarm tangential to said discharge-opening, and an annular series of downward-extendin g Vertieal fingers, and the vertically-vibrating 0perating-lever attached to the grate, and having a pivoted dog or pawl provided with a beveled tooth to engage the fingers of the rotatable ring, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination of the base or hearth plate having the supporting-hangers, the rotatable ring having the follower-arm and the downwardly-extending fingers, the oscillating grate, the vertically-movable operating-lever attached to the grate and confined in a bail depending from the latter, and the dog or pawl pivoted to the operating-lever and having a beveled tooth to engage the fingers of the rotatable ring, substantially as set forth.
6. The combination of the base or hearth plate having the supporting-hangers, tlie rotatable ring having the inwardly-extendingfolloWer-arm, the oscillating grate having the central discharge-opening surrounded by a downward-extendin g flange, the frame mounted upon said flange and having a sliding screen or grate, and the means for simultaneously oscillating the grate and rotating the ring, whereby the follower-arm of the latter shall operate to sweep the contents of the fire-box out through the discharge-opening of the grate when the sliding screen is withdrawn, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JUSTIN LAWYER.
