Description
Qn? e N PETERS. PHOTO-LIYHOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON. Dv C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT B. WEAVER, OF STEUBENVILLE, OHIO.
IMPROVED DEVICE FOR BENDING IRON BARS FOR TRUCKS.
Specilieation forming part of Letters Patent No. 42,978. dated May 3l, 1864.
To all whom it may concern:
- Be it known that I, BOBERT B. WEAVER, of Steubenville, in the county of J eerson and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Device for Bending Iron Bars for Oar- Trucks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will ena-ble others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of' this specitcation, in which- Figure l is a front view of Iny invention; Fig. 2, a transverse vertical section of the same, taken in line :v x, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
This invention relates to a new and useful machine for bending iron bars in proper shape for car-trucks; and it consists in the employment or use of a bed in the form in which it is designed to bend the bars, in connection with a jointed clamp, levers, and a screw or its equivalent, all arranged as hereinafter set forth.
A represents a bedpiece, which is constructed of metal, and having its face or upper side made in the form in which it is designed to bend the bars. (See Fig. 1, in which a represents a central horizontal part; b b, two inclined parts, and c c two horizontal parts at the ends of the bed.)
B is the clamp, also constructed of metal, and formed of Athree parts, d c e, connected together by hinges or joints f. The central part, d, has a horizontal position and is directly over the part a of the bed, and is operated or raised and lowered by means of a screw, C, the nut of which is in a horizontal bar, D, supported by uprights g g, which, in connection with a bar, h, at the back of d, may also serve as guides for the clamp. The
parts e e ot' the clamp B are directly over the parts b b e c of the bed, and to the outer ex d of each part b there is secured by a link or -stirrup, E, a lever, F. To each end ofthe bedpiece there is secured a vertical rack, G. The bed-piece A has a longitudinal groove, i', made in it to receive the bar to be bent, and the central part, a, of the bed is provided with two steady-pins, jj.
The operation isas follows: The clamp B is raised to a height necessary to admit of the bar, properly heated, being laid centrally on the bed-piece, the steadypins j j passing through holes in the bar. The clamp B is then forced down by means of the screw O until the central part, d, is firmly pressed down upon the bar over the part a of the bedpier-e, and the parts e e are then brought down until the leversF catch into the racks G, when said levers are employed for bringing the outer parts ot' the bar down upon the parts b b c c ot' bed. The parts e cof the clamp are raised by means of ropes H H, pressing over pulleys k lc on the bar D, said ropes having weights attached to their ends.
By means of this device the bars may be bent with great facility and of a uniform shape.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is The bed-piece A, in combination with the clamp B, formed of three parts, connected to,- gether by hinges or joints, the levers F F, racks G, and the screw C, or its equivalent, all arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
ROBERT B. WEAVER. Witnesses:
EDWARD ELLIOTT, J AMES SWEENEY.
