J. GEORGE. PACKING BOX.
No. 429,517. Patented June 3, 1890.
} UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN GEORGE, OF PARSONS, PENNSYLVANIA.
PACKING-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 429,517, dated June 3, 1890.
Application filed April 12 1890- Serial No. 347,622. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN GEORGE, acitizen of the United States of America, residing at Parsons, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packing-Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such-as will enable others skilled in the art to which it. appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in packing-boxes for lamp-chimneys; and it consists of anouter casing or box provided at its bottom with ledges, upon which the lower tray rests, and with upper ledges, which bear upon the upper edges of the upper tray, said packing-box being intended for use with three trays arranged in vertical series, the upper and lower trays having central cross-pieces attached to the frames and horizontal partitions of rubber, the bottom section also being provided with a perforated horizontal partition of rubber, combined with a central section consisting of a frame having large perforations, in which the bases of the lamp-chimneys are adapted to rest, the parts being combined to hold lamp-chimneys securely in place when the lid of the box is closed, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claim. Y
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a box, the cover being shown raised and the two sides thereof left off to better illustrate the construction. Fig. 2 is a transverse section showing the lampchimneys in place.
A refers to the side of thebox, to which the bottom A is rigidly secured, and this bottom is provided, adjacent to the sides A A, with strips a, and to the top of the box is secured a hinged cover 13, having strips 1) rigidly secured thereto.
firmly secured partition-plates c and 0 which are preferably made up of rubber cloth. The lower section is secured to the central partition-strip, and the upper section is pro vided with perforations 0 which are of vsubstantially the same size as the upper portion of the chimney, which enters said perforations when the packing-case is in use. The lower edges of the outer frame, which are covered by the rubber fabric, rest directly upon the upper edge of the strips 00, secured to the box.
D refers to the central section or partition, which consists of an outer frame, to the upper-edges of which is secured a rubber fabric cl, having perforations cl, which are of larger diameter than the perforations 0 1n the fabric. The upper-section E is also made up of an outer frame; but it has a transverse partition e, and to the upper edge of the same is secured an imperforated sheet of rubber fabric 6. An eye is also provided for removing this upper section, and it is of such a height that when the hinged cover of the box is lowered the strips 1), which are attached thereto, will contact therewith.
In packing lamp-chimneys in myimproved carrier they are placed as shown in the accompanying drawings, the tops of the chimneys being placed downwardly, so that they will rest upon the imperforated sheet of fabric 0 while the opposite end bears upon the fabric 6'. In order to remove the chimneys,
' it is only necessary to remove-the upper section E, which. can be done by grasping the eye with which the upper section is provided. By extending the strips entirely across the frames the projecting edges will serve as a packing, so that when thesections are pressed upon each other they will be immovable.
I am aware that prior to my invention it has been proposed to provide packing-boxes for lamp-chimneys with an outer casing, to which conical sections are attached, which are adapted to fit in the upper and lower ends of the lamp-chimneys, while said packing-box has intermediate perforated plates, and I do not claim such construction, broadly; but
WVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a packing-box for lamp-chimneys, the
combination of an outer casing having a hinged cover andinterior strips a and b, a series of frames, the upper and lowerframes having transverse partitions and iinperforated horizontal partitions of rubber fabric, the lower section having a perforated horizontal partition, a central section consisting of a side frame and perforated partition, the parts being organized so that the frames will rest one upon the other, the horizontal partitions 10 serving as interposed packing, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
J OIIN GEORGE. Witnesses:
ELIAS COHEN, FRANK THOMAS.
