citizen of the United States, residin at- Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bags or Satchels and Frames Therefor; and I do hereby declare thefollowin g to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of ref erence marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The object of this invention is to reduce the cost of constructing bag-frames of a particular class, to secure greater evenness in the covering material, to allow covering material of a lower grade to be employed with good effect, and to facilitate the operation of covering.

The invention consists in the improved bagframe, and in the arrangements and combinations of parts, substantially as will be hereinafter set forth, and finally embodied in the clauses of the claim.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters indicate corresponding parts in each of the figures of the two sheets of drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of a portion of the improved frame. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail section of the frame, showing the relation of the upper portions of the jaws when the same are closed together. Fig. 3 is a section on line as, and Fig. i is an end view of the frame, the jaws being open.

In said drawings, c a are hinged jaw-sections of the bag-frame, having the usual shape when viewed from the front, as in Fig. 1, and in cross-section having the angular form shown in Fig. 2. The said angular sections, when the jaws are in their closed positions, have their inner vertical flanges I) I) lie in or approximately in parallel planes and their upper or outer flanges c 0 lie in a horizontal plane, or lie approximately in a horizontal plane, at the top of the bag, and at the sides in horizontal planes, as will be understood. The outer edges of the said upper or outwardly-extending flanges c c are provided with series of perforations, which are used in sewing the body material fast to said jawsections, as will be hereinafter described.

To one of the sections a is secured, by means of angular tie-pieces (Z (Z, a band or center section 6, on which the lock f, catches g, and handle 7L have their bearings. Said center section is made of flat strap-like metal, as shown in Fig. 2, is a little larger than the section a, and is held a little away from the same to allow for differences in the thickness of the covering-leather "53' of both the angular and flat jaw-sections. Such construction also allows freedom of the flange c of the section a to pass to and from beneath the central section, as will be understood. The f rame-section being covered with leather or pieces of other material not integral with or independent of the body-leather, and the sections a 6 being rigidly held together by means of the angle-pieces (Z and suitable rivets, as described, the body material It is next sewed to the frame. Where it is fastened to the united sections a e the edge of said body material abuts against the covered plate or section e, and rests on the flange c or the interposed edge of the covering-piece j, and the parts are securely and neatly joined together by the line of stitching n. In like manner the edge 70 of the body material is sewed to the flange of the section a. Said edge abuts against the edge of the central section e, and serves as a stop for limiting the movement of the section a beneath the center section.

By the constructions thus described the body material is secured to the angular sections at an even height at the front and back part of said frame, and is held firmly and smoothly in place; the body material at the the top of the bag is brought nearlyon aplane with the center section, and thus peculiar neatness in appearance is secured, nothing of the frame but the center section being seen, smaller covering-pieces are employed to advantage at a reduced cost, and all is accomplished with facility and case, because of the relations of the parts.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is 1. The improved bag =-frame combining therein a central section consisting of a flat or strap-like piece, an angular section a, rigidly secured thereto and having its upper flange 0 extended outwardly, and an angular section a hinged to said section a and. having an ontWardly-extending flange c lying in the plane of the flange c of the sect-ion a, substantially as set forth.

2. In a bag or satchel, the combination of the body material, sections (1, (1, adapted to receive said body material, and a center section having the edges of said body material abutting against the edges thereof, substantially as shown and described.

3. The improved bag frame combining hinged seetionsa ct, having flanges to receive the body material, a central section of larger size to allow said hinged sections to pass within the same, and angle-pieces for holding the central section to one of the hinged sections, snbstantiall y as set forth.

4. The improved bag or satchel, combining with the body material hinged sections a a, angular in cross seclion and havingoutwardlyextending flanges c 0, provided with perforations, and a central sect1on adapted to overlie the said flanges, the body material being sewed to the flanges o c and lying at its edges close to the edges of the central section, substantially as set forth.
