Description

PATENT OFFICE.
E. G. ROGKWOOD, OF HILLSDALE, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVED BUCKLE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 42,6S9, dated May 10, 1864.
tion of the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side sectional view of my invcntion; Fig. 2, a face View of the same, the
strap being in section, as indicated by the line a' w, Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
This invention consists in constructing the buckle of a metal loop or frame, provided with two cross-bars, a fixed and a movable tongue, all arranged in such a manner that a strap may be secured in the buckle with a loop at each end of it, so as to form a combined snap and buckle, as hereinafter fully set forth.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I willproceed to describe it.
A represents a buckle, which is composed of a loop or frame, a, of slightly curved form longitudinally, and provided with two crossbars, b b. One end, c, of the frame a is of slightly curved or rounded form; the other end, d, is at right angles with the sides of the buckle, as shown clearly in Fig. 2.
To one of the crossbars, b', of the frame a there is attached a loose tongue, e, and also a short rigid or fixed tongue, e.
B represents a strap, which is secured in the buckle A as follows: One end of the strap is fitted on the txed tongue e', and is passed underneath the cross bar b, the loose tongue c passing through a h0le,f, in the strap. rlhe strap then passes under the end d of the buckle, and is turned back so as to form a loop and passes over the cross-bar b, and is bent in the form of a loop and passed under or through the curved end c, the loose tongue c passing through a hole, g, in the strap, and the end ofthe latter passed under the end d ofthe buckle, as shown clearly in Fig. 1. By this.
arrangement it will be seen that a buckle and snap are combined, a loop, h, being obtained at each end ofthe strap B when desired.
This combined buckle and snap will be very useful in many cases. It admits of straps and other articles being readily connected together, while at the same time the device may be used as an ordinary buckle.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A buckle composed of a frame, a, provided with two cross-bars, I) b', one of which, b', has a fixed tongue, e, and a loose tongue, e, attached to it when the said fixed tongue is employed as the means of attaching the strap to the buckle, and all the parts are constructed and arranged in the manner and for the purposes herein set forth.
