W. H. SERJEANT & A. NORTHCOTT.
SAFETY REIN; I M No. 426,868. Patented Ap'ii gsa, 1890.
WJ WZL UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM HENRY SERJEANT AND ARTHUR NORTHOOTT, OF FULHAM, COUNTY OF MIDDLESEX, ENGLAND.
SAFETY-REIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 426,868, dated April 29, 1890.
Application filed June 18, 1889.
T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that We, VVILLIAM HENRY SER- JEANT, gentleman, and ARTHUR NORTHCOTT, surgeon, both of Fulham, in the county of Middlesex, England, British subjects, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Safety-Rein for Riding and Driving;
and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to an improved rein for the more efficient control of a horse or horses when riding or driving than obtains with the employment of such reins as hitherto made and used, and We attain our object by causing the pressure exerted by the rider or driver upon said reins to act simultaneously upon the tail and head of the horse, or the tails and heads of the horses, if more than one be driven. We attain these objects by means of the appliances illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which the rein a is shown attached to one side of the'crupper Z; or other part of the harness or horse furniture that may pass under the tail. Said rein a then is passed through a ring 0, attached to the lower part of the girth or other equivalent portion of said harness, and from thence through a ring d upon the bit or, where this is not deemed requisite, through a ring attached to the headstall or any other suitable attachment to the nose of the horse.
The rein then Serial No. 314 766. (N0 modeh) passes upward to the rider or driver in the usual manner, and the same arrangement is carried out in an exactly similar manner upon both sides, so that the free ends of said reins, after passing through the bit, halter, or other rings d, may be joined to formapair of reins to be manipulated in the usual way, but when made and placed according to our invention are more elfective than those in general use as hitherto made and adopted.
It is essential that the only fixed portions of said reins should be the ends that are attached to the crupper Z) or its equivalent, and that the movement thereof should be perfectly free through the rings 0 and cl.
Having fully described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The herein-described improved continuous safety-rein, consisting of the combination, with the bit having the rings d, the girth having rings 0 on its lower part, and the crupper or tail-strap, of the reins a, secured to the latter strap, passing thence through the rings 0, thence direct to and through the rings d, and thence to the driver, substantially as set forth.
Signed at 4 Little Moorfields, in the city of LondornEngland, this 6th day of June, A. D. 1889.
\VILLIAM HENRY SERJEANT. ARTHUR NORTHOOTT. Witnesses:
