Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY M-ELLisH, oE wALPoLE, NEW HAMPSHIEE.
IMPROVEMENT IN HOLLOW WOODEN WARE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 42,675, dated May 10, 1864.
T0 all whom, t may concern:
Beit known that I, HENRY MELL'IsH, of Valpole. in the county of Cheshire and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Manufacture of Hollow Wooden Vare; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure l represents a piece of wood cut spirally from a cylinder which I use for the manufacture of hollow wooden ware. Fig. 2 is an inverted plan of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical central section of a fruit-basket man ufactured according to my invention.
Similar letters of reference in the three figures indicate corresponding parts.
This invention consists in an article of hollow ware formed from a helical strip of wood and strengthened and secured in the peculiar manner hereinafter described.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed tor describe t with reference to the drawings.
A represents a strip of Wood, which I obtain by cutting spirally round a cylinder of timber. This helical strip may be perfectly smooth and. of uniform thickness, or it may be provided with a bead, c, at the top edge, as shown in the drawings, or it may be still ornamented and strengthened further by moldings of various forms and descriptions. The length of the helical strip depends of course upon the diameter of the cylindei.l from which it is cut l and upon the quality of timber, for it is obvious that timber of the best quality only when treated in the proper manner will perextent. From the helical strip A, I cut off sections of greater or smaller length to make the various kinds of hollow ware-such as fruit-baskets, or measures, or sieves, Ste. rlhe fruit-basket B, which I have represented in Fig. 3 of the drawings, is made of a sector cut from the helical strip A. The ends of this sector are secured together by`a suitable clasp, b, and its bottom edge is firmly attached to the bottom'C. By these means a strong and durable, and at the same time a very light, basket is produced. Its top edge is strengthened by the bead a, and the bottom edge of the sector is rendered rigid and protected by the bottom C. From this example it will be easily understood how articles of different shapes and intended for different uses can be made in the same o r substantially in the same manner. l
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As a new manufacture, an article of hollow wooden Ware made of a scroll, provided at its upper rim with a bead, a, and there secured for the purposes specified.
HENRY MELLISH. ITitnesses:
