DANIEL DAVIS AND ETNA II. DAVIS, OF ELMIRA, NEW YORK.
NAlL-PULLER.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 426,491, dated April 29, 1890.
Application filed May 31, 1889. Serial No. 312,790. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, DANIEL DAVIS and E'INA H. DAVIS, citizens of the United States, residing at Elmira, in the county of Ghemung and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nail- Pullers; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, makinga part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The present invention has for its object to provide a simple and effective device or tool for pulling nails in opening boxes and for other like purposes; and it consists in the several details of construction, substantially as shown in the drawing and hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, which represents an elevation of our improved device, A designates the lover, of suitable metal, which terminates at its lower end in a jaw B and at its upper end in a cold-chisel O for cutting off nails or hoops or for other uses to which it may be adapted, and also as a pry for opening boxes. The chisel also serves as a handle for the tool, as well as for the purposes above enumerated, and is preferably forged from a bar of cast-steel, the end being flattened out wide to adapt it to the many uses to which it can be applied.
The foot-piece D is preferably constructed of malleable iron, with a socket a to receive a jaw E, which is detachably connected thereto in any suitable and well-known manner, and is preferably of cast-steel. The foot-piece D is cored out, as shown, to receive the jaw 13 upon the lower end of the lever, the same beingpivoted thereto at h, and a socket is formed in the foot-piece, as shown at c, to form a seat for one end of a spiral spring (Z, the opposite end of the spring bearing against the under side of the jaw B.
The foot-piece D is provided with heads 6 f, each being on line over the jaws B E, respectively, to serve as anvils to strike on to sink the points of the jaws in the wood around the nail.
The foot-piece D is provided with a fulcrum F, which is slightly curved upon its under side and rests upon the box when the device is in use.
In operation the device is taken hold of by the handle at the upper end and with the left hand, and the points of the jaws rest upon the box at each side of the nail-head, and then strike with a hammer on one or both of the heads to sink the points of the claws suf-.
ficiently deep in the wood to embrace the nail-head. By pressing down on the leverin the direction of the fulcrum the nail can be quickly drawn, the spring forcing the jaw back to its normal position.
Having now fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a device or tool for pulling nails,tl1e lever A, terminating at one end in a cold-chisel C, extending at right angles to said lever, and the opposite end thereof terminating in a claw B, in combination with the foot-piece having fulcrum F, heads 6 f, and claw E, and the spring cl, seated in a socket in said foot-piece, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that we claim the above we have hereunto subscribed our names in the presence of two witnesses.
DANIEL Davis. ETNA H. DAVIS.
lYitnesses:
EDGAR DENTON, CHARLES W. STUART.
