H. EVERITT STEAM PUMP.
N61 36,6(92. Patented Apr. 22,1890.
WZZrzesaew UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT EVERITT, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
STEAM- PUMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 426,002, dated April 22, 1890.
hpplication filed March 11, 1889.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT EvERI'rr, of the city of Brooklyn,in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Steam-Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is applicable to all kinds of steam-pumps; but I have for the purpose of illustration selected a steam-actuated aircompressor, that being the kind of steampump to which the improvement is applicable with special advantage.
I will proceed to describe the improvement with reference to the accompanying drawings, and afterward point out its novelty in the claim.
Figure 1 in the drawings is a side view of an air-compressor embodying my improvement. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the steamcylinders and connections, the air-compression cylinders and their supporting-frame being omitted. Fig. 3 represents a transverse section in the line 00 00, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures.
A designates a bed-plate, at opposite ends of which are support-ed the two horizontal steam-cylinders 13 B.
O is a frame erected upon the bed-plate A and supporting the two horizontal air-compression or pump cylinders D D, which are parallel with the steam-cylinders, but at a considerable elevation above them. The two air-compression cylinder-s D D are in line with each other and their piston-rods are connected together or there is one rod I) common to both, the pistons being at opposite ends of the said rod.
The steam-cylinders B B are more widely separated than the air-compression cylinders D D, and are longer than their pistons, may have a stroke longer than that of the aircompression pistons, and they are somewhat out of line with each other. Their piston-rods F F are connected by means of two connecting-rods G G with two cranks a a on a horizontal shaft II, arranged transversely to the cylinders in bearings Z) on the bed-plate A. These cranks are set at an angle of ninety degrees to each other on the shaft. The
Serial No. 302,871- (Nolnodel-l shaft is represented as provided with two flywheels I I.
J is a lever having a longer lower arm and a shorter upper arm, and having its fulcrum d supported in bearings in the frame O above the steam-cylinders and below the air-compression cylinders, the relative length of the said longer and shorter arms being in proportion to the relative lengths of the steamcylinders B B and the air-compression cylinders D D and to the strokes of their respective pistons. The upper end of the said lever J is connected by two connecting-rods c, with a cross-head f on the piston-rod E. The lower end of the said lever is connected by a connecting-rod g with the crank a, to which the connecting piston-rod G and the steam piston-rod F are represented as also connected.
The steam-cylinders and the compressioncylinder may have any suitable systems of induction and eduction valvesfor instance, such as are commonly employed in steamengines and on air-compression cylinders and I therefore have not thought it necessary in the illustration of my invention to show any valves or valve-gear.
By the arrangement of the steam-cylinders and their connections the compression-cylinders, the lever J, and the connections of the latter with the crank a, and the compressor piston-rod E the steam-pistons are caused to impart to the air-compression pistons a stroke shorter than that of the steam-pistons and to obtain a leverage over the air-piston s. By my arrangement a very effective compressqr is obtained.
It is obvious that the same system of connections, consisting of the lever J, the connecting-rods e g, cranks a, and connectingrod G between the piston-rod F of the steamcylinder B and the piston-rod E of the compression-cylinder D, may be used without the steam-cylinder I3 and its piston-rod F, connecting-rod G, and crank a, and without the compressor-cylinder D, and a complete compressor would thus be left having the most essential features of my invention.
\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the twohorizontal steamcylinders B 1-3 out of line With each other, the two pump-cylinders D D, arranged in line With each other and having" a direct connection between their pistons, the cranks co a, the lever J,'having' a longer and a shorter arm, the latter of which is connected with the rod E of the pn1n1:)-pistons,the rods G G, connecting the pistons of the steam-cylinders with the two cranks a a, respectively, and
the oonneeting'q'od g, connecting the crank 01 10 with the longer arm of the said lever J, al substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
ROBERT EVERITT.
