1 UNITED STATES FFICEQ PATENT APPARATUS FOR REMOVING THE WASTE LlQUIDS FROM VAGINAL INJECTIONS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 425,559, dated April 15, 1890.
" Application filed October 2, 1889. Serial No. 325,814- ll'o model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PHILIPP ANTON ADEL- MANN, doctor of medicine, physician, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Metz, Germany, have invented a new and useful Apparatus for Removing the aste Liquid from Vaginal Injections, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its purpose to remove the inconveniences attendant on the usual mode of administeringinjections into the vagina by means of the irrigating apparatus. These injections are generally applied to the person when in a sitting or cowering posture, which is not only very inconvenient, but. also prejudicial .to a perfect attainment of the desired purpose, which can only be insured by making said injectionswhile the person 0ccupies a more or less horizontal position. This leads generally, particularly when large quantities of liquid are employed, to moistening the dress, bedding, or room, or it necessitates the attendance of another person for pressing down the fore edge of and emptying the bed-vessel.
The apparatus forming the object of this invention and intended to obviate the above inconveniences is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a vertical section of the apparatus on the line III, 2; and Fig. 2, the top View of the apparatus.
Similar letters refer to similar parts th roughout the several views.
This apparatus allows vaginal injections to be performed in a recumbent or lying position of the person, while the liquid, even when considerable quantities thereof are employed, is completely drawn off and conducted into a pail or accumulating-vessel, so as to pre elude any moistening of the bedding, dress, or room. 7
The approved apparatus essentially consists of a circular or other vessel A, having at the bottom a mu'l'flc a for conducting the liquid through an india-rubber or other tube attached thereto into a pail or other receptaole, and at the top on one side a broad slightlyconcave receiving-pan B, the bottom of which gradually ascends outwardly, the sides C C being of triangular shape. The outer edg of said pan is provided with two symmetrically-adjoining segmental recesses G 0 and at the bottom with a cross rib or stay 0', secured so as to be tangential to these recesses.
To use the improved apparatus, the person lies down'crosswise on the bed, puts her legs on chairs on either side of the pail, advances to the edge of the bed and draws the pan so far under her as to cause the point C formed by the segmental recesses C 0 to lie closely before the point of the chine-bone, while only the soft or fleshy parts are in contact with the pan B. By the weight of the body the cross-stay b is pressed into the bedding, and thereby secures the apparatus in its position, while the soft or fleshy parts are firmly pressed against the pan B, thus producing a water-tight separation of the apparatus from the bedding. The liquid flowing back from the vagina when using the irrigating device 7 passes over the pan B into the vessel A, and hence through a tube attached to the muffle a into the'pail or other receptacle.
To facilitate the carrying of the improved apparatus by the physician, the vessel may be made from soft india-rubber or other convenient substance; or the pan B may be secured hinge-fashion to the vessel A to allow the apparatus being folded up.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
In an apparatus for removing the waste liquid from vaginal injections, the combina tion of the vessel A with. the slightly-concave receiving-pan B, the segmental recesses Z2 b the point Z2 and the cross-rib I), as de scribed, and for the purpose specified.
PHILIPP ANTON ADELMANN.
