UNITED TATES GEORGE MOODY BO'WEN, OF TALBOTT, TENNESSEE.
BOOK-COVER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 425,291, dated April 8, 1890,
Application filed September 8, 1889. Serial No. 322,820. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known thatI, GEORGE MOODY BOWEN, of Talbott, in the county of Jefferson and State of Tenncssc e, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book -Covers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make an d use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in bookcovers; and it consists in a blank made of any suitable material, and which is of the particular form hereinafter described, and specially pointed out in the claims.
The objects of my invention are to provide a book-cover which is prepared ready for use, and which can be used either as a wrapper in shippingbooks, or can be applied to books for the purpose of preserving them, as may be desired, and also to provide a cover which can be kept on sale in all book-stores, so as to be applied to books as rapidly as they are sold, and which are to be either given away or sold with the book.
Figure 1 represents a blank from which one of my coverrings is made. Fig. 2 is a plan view of a covering complete.
In making my covers I take a piece of paper or other suitable material A, of any desired size, and first cut away the four corners, as shown at B, for the full distance that the flaps C and D are to be turned inward. The flap C will be made much wider than the one D, because this flap is to be first applied to the book, and it will be made to cover as much After the corners are cut away, in the remaining edges between the cutaway corners are made slits or cut-s G, so as to divide each edge into three narrow flaps H I J. The two flaps H are covered with mucilage upon their inner sides, so that after the flap O hasbeen turned inward upon the dot-ted line L the two narrow flaps H can be turned down upon the one C and pasted in position. The two flaps I are covered with mucilage or pasted upon their inner sides, and are turned inward so as to strengthen the cover along its edges at this point. The slits G between these flaps H I allow the flaps O to be raised at their inner edges, so as to have one cover of the book freely inserted. The narrow flap D is turned inward, and then the flaps having mucilage or paste upon their inner sides are turnedupon it. The slits Gr between the flaps I J allow the flap D to be opened outward at its inner edge, so as to allow the other edge of the book to be inserted between them. It will be seen that this mode of cutting the sheet leaves a blank which is very simple in construction, consisting of the central portion A, having the end flaps C D and the mucilage flaps H I J. A great advantage is gained by making one of the end flaps narrow and the other wide, as here shown. It enables the protector to be easily applied to the book by first inserting one side of the book-back in the wide flap and then the other side of the book-back in the pocket formed by the narrow flap by bending the book backward to a very slight degree. here a cover is composed of two narrow pockets, it is very liable to become accidentally detached from the book and is not reliably held in place also, where a cover is provided with a wide pocket at each end it is necessary to bend the book-back so far as to break or injure it in order to place it upon the .book or detach it therefrom. By forming the cover so as to provide it with a wide pocket at one end and a narrow pocket at the opposite end all the advantages of wide and narrow pockets are retained, while all the disadvantages are obviated.
Covers corresponding to all the different standard sizes of books will be made complete and kept on sale in the stores, so as to be bought like any other article of merchandise either at the time that abook is purchased or at any other. These covers may be pasted and finished complete or left unpasted, as may be preferred.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. A blank for a book-cover protector, formed from a single sheet having its corners cut away so as to form the end flaps C D and the side end flaps H J and the central side flap I, the said side flaps being provided with mucilage on their inner sides, whereby the flaps C D are folded inward and secured by the mucilaged flaps H J, and the central flap I, folded in and secured to'the central portion, whereby it is strengthened, and a pocket formed at each end for the cover of the book, substantially as shown, and described.
2. A book-cover protector formed from a single sheet having two of its corners cut away so as to form along end flap O, and the two opposite corners cut away so as to form the short end flap D, the long side end flaps H, adjacent to and corresponding in length with the long end flap O, and the short side end fiapsJ,adjaeenttoand correspondinginlength with the short end flap D the said side end flapsbeingprovidedwith mueilageon the inner sides, whereby the end flaps O D are folded 15 inward and the side end flaps secured to them, thus forming a'small pocket at one end of the 7 blank and a large one at the opposite end thereof, for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in 20 presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE MOODY BOWEN.
