SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 425,144, dated April 8, 1890.

Be it known that I, ANDREW NELLINGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at \Vichita, in the county of Sedgwick and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Holder for Hitching-Straps, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has relation to a holder for hitching-straps, and among the objects in View are to provide a cheap and simple attachment adapted to be secured to the saddle of a harness and to quickly receive or liberate the free end ofa hitching-strap.

\Vith these general objects in .view the invention consists in a securing-plate the contour of which agrees with that of a harness, perforations formed in the plate, whereby the same is adapted for attachment to the saddle by means of rivets or screws, and in a horizontally-arranged L-shaped hook terminating at its free end and upon its inner face in a locking-shoulder.

Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a perspective of a portion of a harness,ahitchingstrap holder secured to the saddle thereof. Fig. 2 is a perspective of the holder detached; Fig. 3, a transverse section. Fig. 4 is alongitudinal section.

Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.

In practicing my invention I prefer to form the securing-plate and hook in a single casting, which, when polished or plated, will also serve as an ornament to the harness.

1 represents the securing-plate, which is slightly concaved upon its rear face to agree with the curvature of the harness-saddle 2, to which it is secured by means of rivets 3, inserted through openings 4, formed in the ends of the plate. At the center of the plate, formed integral therewith and projecting outwardly therefrom, is an L-shaped hook 5, which extends across the face of the plate 1 and terminates at a point opposite the edge of the plate. The plate 1 opposite the hook is slightly thickened, as at 6, and at a point opposite the end of the hook is beveled outwardly, as at 7. -The extreme end of the hook is provided with a shoulder 8, the outer face of the shoulder being beveled outwardly, as at 9, to correspond with the beveled portion 7.

10 represents an ordinary hitching-strap, the forward end of which, it will be understood, is connected with the bit-ring of the bridle in the usual manner. To secure the strap in place, the same is doubled on itself, the loop either being extended upwardly or downwardly, and the opposite terminals of the strap are inserted edgewise, one at a time, under the hook 5, and after they have entered the same the two terminals are in a line with each other. They are prevented by the shoulder 8 from accidentally passing out through the opening they entered.

It will of course be understood that the loop which thestrap is bent to form will prevent the same from being pulled out in a vertical manner.. To detach the hitching-strap the inner terminal is first drawn out between the bevels 7 and 9, and the main portion follows thereafter. By this it is apparent that no tying of the hitching-strap is necessary, and the same may be accomplished with facility in a short space of time.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is The herein-described hitching-strap holder adapted to be secured to a harness-saddle, the same consisting of a securing-plate having screw or rivet receiving openings and an integrally-formed rigid L-shaped arm extending across the plate and terminating at its free end in a beveled. face and in rear of the same in an inwardly-disposed locking-shoulder, said securing-plate being beveled at a point opposite the beveled end of the arm, substantially as specified.
