(NoModeL) I F. BENZINGER & H. HGRABAU. DRAFTSMANS RULE.
No. 422,701. Patented Mar. 4, 1890.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK BENZINGER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., AND HANS EDGAR GRAlBAU,
OF HOBOKEN, NElV JERSEY.
DRAFTSMANS RU LE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 422,701, dated March 4, 1890. Application filed October 22, 1889. Serial No. 327,806. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, FREDERICK BENZING- ER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York city, in the county and State of New York, and HANS EDGAR GRA- BAU, a German citizen, and a resident of Hoboken, in the county of Hudson, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in DraftsmansRules,of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in the rules used by draftsmen, and especially to that class of rules known as fiat rules.
The fiat rules made heretofore were made flat on top and were beveled toward the side edges, and in order to lift them from the table, drawing-board, or paper it was necessary to insert the finger-nails under the edges of the rule, which made handling of the rule more or less inconvenient.
The object of our invention is to provide a new and improved rule which can easily be grasped, held, and shifted.
The invention consists in the flat rule provided on its upper surface with a longitudinal handle-ridge.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of our improved draftsmans rule. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a modified construction of the same. 7
Similar letters of referenceindicate corresponding parts.
The rule A, which may be made of wood, ivory, hard rubber, or any other suitable sub stance, is provided along its edges with bev els a, upon which the scalesubdivisions are produced in the usual manner. At the upper edge of each bevel a a longitudinal groove 1) is formed in the top of the rule, and between said grooves the raised longitudinal handle projection B is formed.
As the rules of this kind require a greater thickness of material than the ordinary fiat rules, and much of this material will go to waste in forming the bevels a and b, the 1011- gitudinal raised handle projection B can be made as. a separate dovetailed piece which can be inserted into a longitudinal dovetailed groove in the top of the rule.
Having thus described our invention, we
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. Aliat draftsmans rule provided with the side bevels a, the longitudinal grooves 5, adjacent to said bevels, and the raised handle projection B between said grooves b, substantially as set forth. 7
2. The combination, with a flat draftsmans rule, of a longitudinal, raised handle-piece dovetailed into the top of said rule, substantially as set forth. i
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our invention we have signed our names in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FRED. BENZINGER.
HANS EDGAR GRABAU.
